Chapter 20

A tall, thin young woman walked into the hotel, carrying a suitcase and a small bag. Her eyes were slightly swollen and red and she looked exhausted as she checked in. After getting some info from the clerk, she walked onto the elevator, ignoring the young bell hop that was watching her. She stepped off on the top floor and left her stuff in her room, then walked down the hallway and knocked on room 690. There was no answer, and she was about to turn and leave when a deep voice from behind her asked, "Can I help you?" *

*Kevin's POV*

I was heading downstairs to get a soda from the machine, when I saw this gorgeous woman knocking on Kris' door. I knew Kris was out, so I approached her.

"Can I help you?" She gasped and turned around, and I saw the greenest eyes I'd ever seen, and they kind of reminded me of cat's eyes. She brushed a golden brown strand nervously behind her ear and said, "No, I don't think.. actually, maybe you can. Do you know the woman in this suite?" I smiled a friendly grin at her.

"Sure, that's Kris' room, but she's out at the moment. Do you want me to have her contact you when she gets back? It may be a while," I offered, realizing just how exhausted she looked.

"Did you just get here? You look tired. Um, sorry, I didn't quite catch your name." The woman finally smiled, and it took my breath away. Her face had been serious, with a touch of sadness in her eyes, but when she smiled, it was completely to her advantage.

"That's because I didn't throw it. I'm Cora, and you are?"

"Kevin Richardson," I replied, shaking her hand firmly. It pleased me that she didn't know immediately what my name was, and it made me want to know more about her. And she had a sense of humor.

"To answer your question, yes, I just got here. My room is down the hall.. 694, I think. Would you please tell Kris that I'm here if she gets back within the next hour? I don't know how much longer I can stay awake," she said, yawning on cue.

"My room is right next to yours, Cora, if you want some coffee, I think I can keep you awake," I offered, nodding towards my room. She paused, and I could see the hesitance in her eyes.

"I'd like that," Cora said, and I felt my heart beat faster as she smiled up at me, but something about her looked way too familiar and was sending off warning bells in my head. I shook it off and thought, "She's harmless Kevin, you're getting too old and worrisome!" *

Kris and Brian ran into Howie in the lobby, on his way back from clubbing. His perpetual grin grew wider as he saw them walk in holding hands, happiness radiating from their eyes.

"So, you're finally together! Congratulations, both of you, I'm very happy for ya!" Howie said, slapping hands with Brian and hugging Kris.

"You look splendid, Kris, and very happy," Howie observed as he looked up at her, and Kris blushed.

"Thanks, Sweet D. I am very happy!" She smiled at Brian and held his hand as they said good night to Howie, stepped off the elevator and entered her room.

"Brian, tonight truly was a dream come true, I'll never forget it as long as I live. We finally made it, hon, and nothing will keep me from you, ever again. Thank you, for not giving up! I love you," Kris whispered in his ear, holding him close.

"I love you too, I'm never gonna get tired of saying that, but I am tired! I'm gonna change, I'll only be a minute." He disappeared into his room and Kris changed quickly. It was 3 am, and she glanced out at the stars, thinking about the star she'd seen earlier. "I wonder what else is gonna happen that will change my life?" she thought, then slipped into bed and waited for Brian. *

Kevin woke up the next morning around 9:30, and realized he'd forgotten to leave Kris a note about Cora. As he got dressed, he smiled and his heart beat faster as he thought about her. They'd talked for hours, though she'd never mentioned how she knew Kris or why she was so sad. He was never one to probe, so he let it be. She loved surfing and a good, home cooked meal, just like him, and they had so much more in common.

"I can't wait to spend more time with her," Kevin thought as he knocked on Kris' door around 10. Kris opened the door, her dark hair wet from her shower.

"Wassup Kevin? Brian's still asleep, but I've been trying to wake-" Kevin interrupted her.

"Hi, let him sleep! Um, a friend of yours is here, came in around 1 this morning, and wants to talk to you, ASAP. Her name is Cora.. she never threw her last name at me." Kevin laughed quietly to himself, and Kris only gave him a strange look.

"Why is Cora here, did she say? Ooh, I can tell you like her!" Kris smiled, amazed. Kevin hadn't been on a date in the longest time, and Brian had confided to her that it was because of a young woman named Debbie, who had hurt him deeply after ending their 5 year relationship. Kevin blushed.

"Yeah, I like her, but she never said why she was here. She's next door." He led the way and Kris knocked lightly on her door. *
