Chapter 41

Brian played back the song he had just recorded, listening so intently that he didn't hear his cell phone until the second ring. Throwing his head phones onto the seat beside him Brian ran to his phone.

"Yeah?" he asked breathlessly.

"Brian, are you still at the studio?"

"Hello to you too, cuz. Yeah, I am. Why?" before Kevin even said it, Brian felt something deep inside say it had to do with Kris.

"Kris went to the house to talk to you. Now no one is answering there, and she's not answering her phone or beeper. She should've been there a long time ago, and AJ says he thinks something is wrong." There was a hesitant pause, before Kevin's deep voice continued, "And that it may have to do with Josh." Brian's stomach clenched and he thought quickly.

"I can be at the house in 15 minutes, tops. I'll call you back as soon as I get there." Brian hung up and left the studio. He never heard Kevin's last sentence, speaking to the dead dial tone.

"Be careful, cousin." *

Kris fought to quell the panic rising in her body, before it overtook her. Destiny started talking slowly to her.

"Kris, I really don't want to kill you, but I really don't have a choice. I have loved Josh for so long, and he only wants you. I've been with him for so long, and even though he never says anything, I know it's you he wants."

"You can have him, Destiny. If I could, I would make him love you. I only want Brian." Kris' mind raced, and she came up with a plan as Destiny came within five feet or so. Looking over Destiny's shoulder, Kris gasped.

"Josh?"

"Josh?" Destiny repeated, confused and distracted enough to look behind her for a split second. Kris reacted quickly, kicking the gun out of Destiny's hand viciously. It slid across the wooden floor, stopping next to the door. Destiny barely had time to spit out, "B*tch!" before Kris attacked, her fist powerfully connecting with Destiny's face. Kris scrambled for the gun, and her fingers just barely brushed the cold metal when Destiny slammed into her full force. Her nose bled freely and the look of pure fury on her face unnerved Kris.

Unfortunately for Kris, Destiny outweighed her by at least 30 lbs. and she had Kris pinned to the floor in moments.

"Did you actually think you could win, Kristina?" Destiny punched Kris in the stomach, hard. Kris refused to make a sound, though it hurt like h*ll. "Oh, your boyfriend is an excellent kisser, may I add. I almost managed to get him in the sack," Destiny sneered, triumph in her eyes as she laughed happily. Kris felt hatred she had stored for long rising to the surface, and with it came strength.

"B*tch!" Kris cried, and her thumbs found Destiny's windpipe with deadly accuracy. Destiny clawed in vain at Kris, pure hate written in her eyes as her air supply dwindled. Suddenly, the door opened behind them and a low voice growled, "What the h*ll?" Kris glanced over her shoulder in time to see the foot directed at her head and ducked so it hit her shoulder, so hard it knocked her over. As Kris writhed in pain, Destiny coughed, then climbed to her feet, smiling.

"Thanks, Josh. She almost had me for a sec." The next moment, Destiny hit the wall with a loud thump and she let out a pitiful whimper.

"What the heck? Didn't I tell you not to touch her?" Kris sat up and realized what was happening. She slowly tried to slip away, but the figure turned to her and said quietly, "Hello Kris. I've missed you, baby." *

No sooner had Brian stepped in his BMW did it start pouring rain. Brian peered through the waves of water streaming down his windshield, the wipers not helping very much. The rain pounded out a rhythm on the roof as he sped as quickly as he possibly could towards home, his mind racing. What if Kris was fine? What would they say to each other? And, the thought that Brian pushed away but always seemed to come creeping back- What if Josh really was there, and Kris was in trouble? A low rumble and a coughing sound fully commanded Brian's attention, even more so when the car lost power and died.

"Oh, sh*t! Of course it freakin' had to be now!" Brian yelled loudly, punching the passenger seat. Okay, think calmly, Brian told himself. Peering out the window, Brian could tell her was about 2 ½ miles from the house.

"Sh*t, no cell phone." The phone was back at the studio, laying where Brian had thrown it earlier. Brian realized, with a groan, there was only one way to go about this. Grabbing his baseball hat, Brian locked the car and stepped out quickly, soaked in an instant. Then Brian ran, ignoring the needles of rain spearing his face and arms.

"If AJ is wrong, I'm gonna kill him," Brian muttered. But somehow, he knew AJ was right and this only made him run harder. He disappeared into the sheets of rain, the only sign Brian had ever been there was his car, silently waiting on the side of the road. *

"Sh*t, AJ! Are you okay?" Cora cried, kneeling beside the pale man. He had just fallen to the ground, like someone had thrown him, and was now moaning in agony. "Kevin! Help me!" Cora screamed, rolling AJ only his back.

"Oww! Don't let him hurt me!" AJ whimpered, curling up into a little ball.

"What's wrong, Cora? I thought you were being murdered-" Kevin trailed off, glimpsing AJ and the frantic look on Cora's face. "Get a cold cloth," Kevin commanded, scooping his friend up from the floor.

"G*d, my f*ckin shoulder! Make him stop, please," AJ whispered. Kevin frowned, totally lost as to what was happening.

"Bone, it's okay. Your shoulder is fine." Kevin placed the lightest touch upon AJ's offending shoulder and he started screaming and swearing. Rolling AJ over, Kevin saw the nastiest bruise, strangely in the shape of a shoe. He could even see the Nike logo imprinted in AJ's skin. "What the h*ll?" Kevin muttered, pulling off AJ's sunglasses carefully.

"Oh my Lord," Cora gasped, dropping the wet cloth. AJ's face had turned puffy, his eyes black and blue circles.

"AJ, AJ. Can you hear me, man?" Kevin asked. He saw a glimmer of recognition and a slight nod. "Good. What's going on?" Kevin leaned close for AJ's came out as a whisper, barely.

"Kris.. Josh. Help her! She's pleading with me to help!" "Brian is on his way, he should be there soon." AJ bolted upwards, terror written on his face.

"No, no! Get Brian away! Josh will kill him!"

"AJ, calm down. Lay back, I'm calling the doctor," Kevin said, pushing AJ back gently. Cora walked back in, pale and looking thoroughly shaken.

"I told everyone to go home. It's gonna pour soon, anyway." No sooner had Cora said the words did the rain start drumming on the roof above, thunder booming in the distance. *
