Chapter 3

The apartment was great! Apparently, it wasn’t as expensive as it looks and they had decided that since they would be in Orlando for two months with me joining them for the last month it would be less expensive to rent an apartment than to stay in a hotel. The apartment had a living room, dining room, kitchen, one and a half bathrooms, and three bedrooms. I figure they purposely looked for an apartment with three bedrooms or two of us would end up sharing a room and eventually killing each other.

After showing me to the room that they had decided would be mine, and leaving me alone to unpack, I examined my surroundings. I had the corner room with windows on two out of the four walls, which would make it very bright during the day. The floor was wood, as it was everywhere else in the apartment, with small area rugs of different vivid colors scattered around. The wallpaper looked as though it had been splatter painted with many different colors, as did the bedspread. The only other pieces of furniture in the room besides the bed were a dresser with a mirror, a bookcase, a night table, and a desk and chair set, all made of the same shiny wood. I instantly loved the room. It reminded me of a painter’s palate. Now I know why they chose this room for me.

Being a major procrastinator, I decided not to unpack now, and to explore the rest of the apartment instead. I entered the hallway and opened the door to the left of mine. I immediately knew that this was Deb’s room. The wallpaper had a baseball theme and the bed spread was Yankees. There were Derek Jeter and Backstreet Boys posters scattered on the walls and ceiling. There are also elephant figurines on the dresser and bookcase, and of course Penelope, Deb’s favorite stuffed elephant, was on the bed. Smiling, I closed the door and walked across the hall to open the door to the left of my own.

Stacie, ever being the "girly" one of the group, had chosen the room decorated in a floral motif. This was really odd. It was almost as if whoever decorated this apartment knew our personalities.

The door next to Stacie’s was the full bathroom. As I continued down the hallway towards the living room my exploration is interrupted by shrieks of happiness and disbelief coming from the living room.

As I enter the room Stacie and Deb fling themselves at me once again, but this time I move out of the way making them laugh. "What’s going on?" I ask.

"We got studio time!" they shouted in unison.

"We sent a demo tape of the two of us to a recording studio and we just got a message o our answering machine saying that we have recording time tomorrow at 9am!" Deb explained excitedly.

"I’m so happy for you guys!" I said sincerely. "But if you have to get up early tomorrow you’d better go to bed now. It’s 10:30pm."

"Is it really that late?" Stacie whined. "I wanted to spend more time with you today."

I smiled. "You have the next month to be with me, and don’t forget my flight didn’t even come into Orlando until eight."

They both went reluctantly to bed after saying goodnight, leaving me alone once more.

I returned to my room to unpack. After arranging my clothing and shoes in the drawers and closet, I moved on to the other stuff. I put some novels and art books on the top shelf of the bookcase. On the shelf below it I placed my CDs along with my two favorite music boxes; a piano in a snow globe that plays "Fur Elise" and a rocking horse that plays "Somewhere Out There." On the dresser I placed pictures of family and friends, and my jewelry box. I put my alarm clock on the night table and plugged it in. On the shelf under the night table I plugged in my CD player. I piled all of my art supplies on the desk to arrange later and last I put the few stuffed animals I had brought on my bed.

Sighing, I looked around. The room still looked a bit empty, but I’d probably accumulate more stuff while I was there. I changed into pajamas, brushed my teeth, and looked at the clock. It was 2am. Sleepily I put my Backstreet Boys CD, Millenium, on and climb into bed. I’m humming along as I drift off to sleep.
