Chapter 9

"You’re quick," I muttered. Stacie and Deb’s attention turned quickly back to me.

"Oh, Meliss, you look horrible!" Deb cried out.

"Thanks," I replied sarcastically. Deb handed me a tissue to hold against the cut in my forehead. It wasn’t deep, so I knew I wouldn’t need to go to the hospital.

"What happened?" Stacie questioned.

As we walked toward the cars I told everyone the entire story. I hated having to relive that. I shuddered as I finished my story. I didn’t want to think about it.

By this time we had reached the cars. One was a green Durango that was Nick’s and the other was Kevin’s red BMW. We all stood behind the cars in a silent circle. I was the one who finally broke the silence. "Thank you all so much for helping me," I said looking at each of the five guys in turn. "I don’t know what would have happened if you hadn’t been there." I then went to each guy and gave him a one armed hug. (I needed the other arm to hold my shirt up).

"We’d better go to the police station," Kevin said.

We split up; Brian, Nick, Deb, Stacie, and I in the Durango, and Howie, AJ, and Kevin in the BMW. As Nick pulled out of the parking space Brian turned on the radio. The station I happened to be on was playing "I Want It That Way." Stacie and Deb immediately pulled hairbrushes out of their bags and began singing into them.

They were definitely still drunk. Although they did this all the time they never would have done it in front of BSB members! I was sitting between them (lucky me!). I leaned forward and spoke to Nick and Brian.

"I’m just gonna pretend I don’t know them," I said. Brian and Nick just laughed.

"How old are you?" Nick asked out of the blue. This was gonna be fun. Brian laughed.

"Take a guess," I replied.

"Well, I would say 12, but you were in the club, so ya gotta be older than that. Hmmm……… I don’t know, I give up."

"I’m 19," I stated.

"Are you kidding? YOU"RE the same age as ME! You’re so tiny!" I was laughing now. This was the reaction I got from just about everyone, including ten-year-olds.

"Yup, I’m the same age as you! So is Deb. She’s the one in blue. My sister, Stacie, is 18," I said as I gestured towards each of them. "Oh! I forgot to introduce you guys!" By this time Stacie and Deb had finished serenading us, so I introduced them to Brian and Nick.

Just as I finished we pulled up in front of the police station. I had tried to push the incident to the back my mind, but it all comes rushing back now. I felt the color begin to drain from my face.

"We’re here," Nick announced as he turned off the engine. All four doors swung open as Stacie, Deb, Brian, and Nick all hopped out. I sat there with my hands clenched. "Yo, you OK?" asked Nick.

I took a deep breath and answered, "Yeah, I’m alright." Then I climbed out of the Durango.

Nick noticed that I was still holding on to my shirt and said, "I have an extra T-shirt in the car. Do you want to borrow it?"

"Yes," I said, "thank you." Well that solved one minor problem, although because of the height difference the shirt went down to my knees. Once I had manage to get the T-shirt on we all walked into the police station together.

Kevin, Howie, AJ, and the police officers that had come to the club were waiting to question all of us. They told us that they had something to tell us before they questioned us though.

"The man that attacked you," said one police officer, directing the comment at me, "the police have been after for five months. In the past five months a number of girls have disappeared from The Stardust. None of them have been found. Your attacker has admitted that he has been kidnapping, raping, and then killing the girls. You were very lucky……." The officer’s voice trailed.

I felt all the blood drain from my face…………now I know what would have happened if the guys hadn’t been there. I shivered. I didn’t even want to think about the possibility.
