Chapter 16
I woke with a start at a flash of bright light. I blinked and looked across the room. Stacie and Deb were standing there, both giggling like mad. They had pulled up the shades on all the windows simultaneously. That was why the room had suddenly become so bright. I glanced at the clock beside my bed. It was noon. "Thanks for the wake-up call guys."
"Good you're up," said Stacie. "Now you can make breakfast while we get another hour of sleep. You fell asleep before us after all."
A thought struck me just then. "Wait a minute! How did I get here? The last thing I remember is lying on the floor watching 'Spaceballs' with you and the guys."
When the movie ended, Brian noticed you were asleep. We didn't want to wake you, so Brian carried you to your room," Deb replied. "Then they all left because it was almost five in the morning."
"You mean Brian saw my room? It's a mess!" I surveyed the disastrous area. My bed had been left unmade the night before, there was and still are, clothes strewn about the room, and there was a half finished painting on my desk with brushes floating in muddy water.
Stacie laughed. "I told you to keep it clean!"
"Oh well, he's probably pretty messy himself. Most guys are," I speculated. "But you two aren't going back to sleep! You're going to help me make breakfast and we're all going to gossip."
"About what?" asked Stacie stupidly.
"What do you think genius," I replied sarcastically.
"Nick and AJ!" Deb squealed.
"Oooo favorite topic!" screeched Stacie.
After that all we heard about was Nick non-stop.
Apparently, the highlight of Stacie's evening was when he kissed her goodnight. Maybe I should say good morning since it was already almost five in the morning when they left.
Together we made omelets, talking and laughing the whole time. "So, I guess we'll be seeing the guys again since you two are hooked up with Nick and AJ now?" I guessed.
"You bet!" said Deb grinning. "In fact, they're supposed to call "
"RING! RING!" the telephone interrupted.
"Well, I was going to say soon, but I guess it's now," Deb said laughing as Stacie leapt out of her seat and dove for the phone.
"Hi Nick," said Stacie. There was a brief exchange and then Stacie said, "Yeah, hold on a minute." She looked up at Deb and I. "The guys invited us to spend the day at their house having a barbecue and swimming! You wanna go?" Stacie looked at us expectantly.
"Of course!" both Deb and I said. (There we go again. Saying things in unison. We've really got to stop that.)
"OK Nick, we'll be there. See you later. Bye."
Stacie hung up the phone.
"What time do we have to be there?" Deb asked.
"Oh, not 'till two," Stacie replied calmly.
"Are you forgetting that it's a quarter to one now?" I asked.
"It is?" Stacie was shocked.
"Yup, and did you remember to get directions to their house, or were you and Nick lost in fantasy land?"
"Ummmm "
"I'll take that as a no," I said. "What's their phone number?" I asked as I picked up the phone. I dialed as Deb rattled it off.
The phone rang four times before someone finally picked up. "Hello?" they asked.
"Hey Howie. It's Melissa."
"Hi, what's up? You coming later?"
"Well, I'd really like to, but leave it to Stacie and Nick to make plans, we don't have directions. Would you be willing to give me directions to your house?"
"Oh sure," he replied. Then he proceeded to give me the directions.
"OK, thanks Howie. I'll see you later. Bye," I said as I hung up the phone.
I ran to my room and grabbed some clothes. I scooted into the bathroom as Deb walked out, just seconds before Stacie reached the door.
"Hey! I was going next!" she whined.
"You're too slow!" I stuck my tongue out at her andclosed the door.

I joined Deb in the living room with my backpack slung over my shoulder.
Over my blue, one piece Speedo I had thrown a pair of denim shorts, a tank
top with a picture of the slinky dog from "Toy Story" on it, and my sneakers.
In my backpack I had thrown sandals and an extra set of clothing along with
a hat and a bottle of sun block.
Deb also had a bag (Yankees of course) filled with similar things, but we
sure weren't dressed similarly. She had redefined the term "short shorts"
and was wearing another low cut shirt (how many of those does she have?).
I rolled my eyes and Deb laughed. "It's fun to make people think you're a
slut!" Now I laughed with her. She'd been saying that since we were 12 and
didn't even know what a slut really was.
By this time it was 1:15. "Where's Stacie? I want to leave in plenty of extra
time in case we get lost," said Deb, who was going to drive.
"You know Stacie," I replied. "She always takes the longest."
"Next time one of us is making the plans and allowing for the time it takes
Stacie to get ready," Deb said.
Almost as if on cue, Stacie walked in saying "I'm ready!" I saw that she
had a small bag too. Good, then she won't whine to borrow our stuff.
After locking the apartment door behind us we trooped down to the car. Deb
climbed into the driver's seat, I climbed into the front passenger seat to
navigate, and Stacie hopped into the back. She was no good at navigating
and she didn't want to drive, so she would just sit quietly (we hoped) in
the back seat listening to the radio. Deb started the car and we were on
our way.
