Chapter 24

I was in that groggy state between sleep and full consciousness when I heard someone calling me. "Meliss? Melissa? Gigi?"

"Shut up," I mumbled snuggling down into the blanket.

I had just fallen asleep again when……

"MELISSA!?!?!?" screeched a voice very close to me. I snapped my eyes open and looked around, very disoriented. I was in Brian's room, in his bed, and Deb was standing a few feet away staring at me like I had grown another head. Where was Brian?

"What do you want? I'm tired," I whined.

"What are you doing in here? You had me worried when you weren't in your room or downstairs this morning……"

"Just shut up," I heard a voice groan from the other side of the bed as a pillow was flung in Deb's direction. Brian sat up groggily and glared at Deb. "She came in here to talk to me because she was worried about you and Stacie when you weren't home and it was after three in the morning," Brian said.

"Why does everybody keep thinking the wrong thing about us Lis?" Brian asked me silently though saddened eyes. "We're not like that."

"I know you're not like that," Deb said out loud. "I was just surprised to find Melissa in here. I'm sorry if I sounded accusing."

"It's OK Deb," I replied. "Kevin and Howie made the same mistake earlier. Kevin actually started to lecture us!" This last comment broke the ice as the three of us laughed.

"What did Kevin and Howie walk into that Kev thought he had to lecture you for?" Deb questioned curiously. By this point I was standing up next to Deb and Brian was standing by the bed.

I gave Deb an evil grin as I shouted, "THIS!" and lunged for Brian who I had caught totally off guard once again. We both tumbled back onto the bed as Deb laughed.

"What was the cause of that?" Deb asked. "It's usually one of my off the wall reactions, not yours."

"Oh, just some very good news that we'll only tell you if everyone's awake," I said casually.

"This got Deb's attention. "Everyone's awake except Stacie and Nick, but I'll volunteer to be the one to go into the lions' dens! It must be something big! I know what's in your head, don't forget!" she said.

"Well, if you want to know exactly what it is have everyone in the kitchen in fifteen minutes," Brian bargained.

"You've got a deal," Deb said sticking out her hand.

*************15 minutes later**************

Everyone, now much more awake, was assembled in the kitchen. Nick and Stacie were the last two to walk in grumbling about being woken up. "This had better be good," Stacie growled before plopping herself down in a chair next to Nick.

They all sat at the table watching Brian and I expectantly. "Stacie, Deb, you don't know this," I began, "but I knew Brian before that night at the club. We met that morning in the recording studio while you were making your demo. We literally bumped into each other in the hallway."

"Why didn't you tell us?" Stacie asked in a shocked voice.

"Let me finish. Brian and I talked for a while and in doing so I told him that you two were recording a demo. Before he left he made me promise that I wouldn't tell anyone I had met him because they had all come home for vacation a few days early to have some peace. Everything that happened later you know, except for what Brian's about to tell you now," I said wrapping up my end of the story.

"Remember a few days ago you tow were singing in the living room?" Brian asked, directing the question at Stacie and Deb. They both nodded. "Well, it reminded me of the demo tape and yesterday I went back to the studio to listen to a copy. You two are amazing!" Stacie and Deb were now wearing broad smiles. "I asked our producer to listen to you and he thinks you have something special. He wants to meet with you tomorrow morning!"

As Brian finished his announcement I looked around the room. Stacie and Deb had jumped up and hugged each other. AJ and Nick's jaws were swinging freely from their faces, (they had no idea about the demo, Stacie and Deb had never told them in case they didn't make it) but once they got over the initial shock they were smiling as broadly as the rest of us. "Group hug!" Deb yelled.
