Chapter 26
I looked at Brian, Stacie, and Deb, each in turn, trying to read their eyes, but none of them would look at me. I felt disappointment rising inside me. "What happened?" Nick asked moving towards Stacie.
Stacie clasped Nick's hand and said, "We want to talk to al of you inside. Are Kevin and Howie here?"
"Yeah, they're here," AJ answered, unlocking the door. "I think they're in the kitchen." We all filed into the house and to the kitchen. Howie had been cooking dinner and Kevin was pulling dishes out of the cabinet.
As soon as they saw us they put down what they were doing and sat at the kitchen table. We all followed suit. "So, what happened?" Nick repeated his question.
"Well, I took them to see our producer……" Brian started.
"We know that part!" Nick said impatiently.
"Well, it wasn't what we were hoping for, but we have a chance!" Stacie practically screeched as she flew at Nick.
"What?" I asked, confused.
Now it was Deb's turn to explain, and more thoroughly
I might add. "He's wasn't sure if the industry will take to another girl group, but after he heard us sing he said he'd be willing to give us a shot. He thinks we have something going for us. We're going to do a trial performance!"
"At the opening show of OUR next tour in Orlando!"Brian finished.
"That's great!" AJ said enthusiastically.
"Why'd you get us so worried then? From the looks on your faces I thought you'd been rejected! That wasn't nice," I scolded.
"We had you fooled good!" Brian said seeming very pleased with himself as Stacie and Deb giggled.
I smiled too. "So when's the concert? When do you guys go back on tour?"
"August 18," Kevin answered solemnly. "I feel our vacations are too short, even though I do love the stage." My heart fell at this news, though I tried not to show it. I was leaving on the morning of the 19th, and I had wanted to spend the day on the 18th all together.
"What's wrong Lis?" Brian asked me quietly. I obviously hadn't done a good enough job hiding my feelings, at least from Brian anyway.
"The 18th is my last day here. I wanted all of us to do something special our last night together."
"But we are. I planned it all out. Remember how I kept drifting off on Saturday night? I was planning the concert. I already knew that Stacie and Deb would be performing that night as our opening act. When you told me that you played sax, clarinet, and piano, and wanted to learn the guitar I got an idea. You're going to play with Mindy in the band for us!"
My face lit up immediately. "Thank you so much Brian! You're the best!" I said jumping up and giving him a hug.
"Did you tell her Brian?" Stacie asked.
"Yup," he replied, "I did!"
Deb, Stacie, and I all embraced in a giant hug.
"Congrats on your debut guys!" I said sincerely.
"And congrats on yours," Deb said smiling.
The house was a whirl of excitement and activity for the rest of the day.
We had a feast with Howie's Chinese cooking and we all stayed up just about
all night making plans for the remaining three weeks of our vacation.
