Chapter 22

"Brian?"

Brian opened his eyes and sat up in bed. "Huh?" he mumbled.

He looked around the room, but it was empty. Who had spoken? He shook his head, bewildered. He had been so sure that someone had said his name. Then he shrugged, dismissing it as his dream.

Faith wrapped her arm around Brian's waist as they walked down the boardwalk. Her fingers clung to the fabric of his shirt, and she could see it moving in and out as he breathed.

"Wait," Faith said suddenly, tugging him to a halt. "I want to see this display."

Brian waited patiently as she disappeared behind the rack.

"Brian!"

He froze in alarm as the familiar voice washed over him. He turned slowly, and barely missed being knocked over by two long tanned arms flung around his neck.

"I missed you so much!" Leighanne squealed. She showered kisses all over his face.

"Leighanne," he muttered around her kisses, turning his head. "What are you doing here?"

"I missed you so bad and I jus couldn't take it anymore."

He put his hands on her hips and gently pushed her away. Her hands were still on his neck, and he fought back his grimace.

"Look what I-" Faith stopped short when she saw Brian's hands on Leighanne's waist. Her breathing stopped, and huge tears welled up in her eyes. He looked at her wide-eyed over Leighanne's shoulders, his mouth forming her name. She shook her head dumbly and turned and ran.

Games, changes and fears
When will they go from here
When will they stop
I believe that fate has brought us here
And we should be together babe
But we can't

I play if off but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool, but I'm feeling

Faith ran blindly, not caring that people were stopping and staring as she cried mercilessly. She should have known that things weren't meant to be. He had known Leighanne forever, all the guys knew her…they were an item. They were getting married. And Leighanne's hands fit perfectly into the crook of his neck, and his hands on her waist looked so right. They looked natural together, and Faith felt like throwing up.

I try to say goodbye and I choke
Try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there.

Somehow she made it to the beach, but she didn't stop running. She couldn't stop. She had to get away. The humilitation…the hurt, and pain were unbearable. She loved Brian…he said he loved her! Why couldn't things work out for her for once? All her life…

I may appear to be free
But I'm just a prisoner of your love
And I may seem all right and smile when you leave
But my smiles are just a front
Just a front, hey
I play it off but I'm dreaming of you
And I keep my cool but I'm feeling

Faith cried out in agony, and her knees gave out from under her. She collapsed on the sand and buried her face in her arms. Sobbing heart-wrenchingly, she stayed there for ten minutes. Brian never came.

Here is my confession
May I be your possession?
Boy I need your touch
Your love kisses and such
With all my might I try
But this I can't deny
Deny

I play it off but I'm dreaming of you
And I'll keep my cool but I'm feeling

Sun never shone on Faith. Birds never sang down on her, she was never blessed. Her heart was torn to pieced, and she didn't want to live. Brian had become a part of her…had been a part of her for so long. She loved him. She knew that. And to hear him say he loved her back had been too good to be true. Faith knew now that it was.

I try to say goodbye and I choke
Try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear
My world crumbles when you are not there

Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it's clear

My world crumbles when you are not there
Goodbye and I choke
I try to walk away and I stumble
Though I try to hide it, it’s clear
