Chapter 28

"What am I going to wear?" Faith exclaimed. "It starts in an hour! Destiny! Help me!"

Destiny rushed in. "What?" she cried. "What's wrong?"

"I need something to wear!"

Destiny hugged Faith tightly. "What made you so happy all of a sudden?"

"I'm gonna talk to Brian!" she squealed. Destiny screamed.

"Really?" she yelled. "Yes!"

Destiny ran around the room in a frenzy, pulling every piece of clothing Faith owned out of her closet and throwing all over her bed. In the end, they decided on a pair of black capris and a white Old Navy tank top. White canvas boat shoes completed the outfit, and Destiny pulled Faith's hair up into two small buns, with scattered butterfly clips everywhere.

"You look fantastic!"

"Thank you!"

"Let's go!"

"Ladies and Gentlemen, the Backstreet Boys…"

Screams erupted throughout the audience. Faith jumped up, frantically trying to catch sight of Brian, but all she saw was Nick, Howie, and Kevin lead the way out.

"Where's Brian?" she yelled to Grace, who shrugged in reply.

And then there he was. Dressed in khaki shorts and a Hawaiian shirt, he looked so good that Faith's knees went weak. And-was he looking for her? He was scanning the crowd, and finally his glance fell on her. He smiled, and the crease in his forehead disappeared, replaced by laugh lines. She almost fell over.

"Hello, everyone," he called out to the audience. Faith closed her eyes and let his voice fill her ears, sending tingles down her whole body.

Brian noticed Faith close her eyes, and he had to resist every urge he felt to jump off stage and take her in his arms and never let go.

"First, we have 'Larger Than Life'," AJ said, and the screams intensified.

Brian realized suddenly how much he had missed being on stage.

"Then 'I Want It That Way'," Nick added. Brian grinned as he saw some older girls jumping up and down with joy.

"But we only have time for two other ones, and we decided on 'Back To Your Heart' and 'Don't Wanna Lose You Now'," Brian said.

"For personal reasons," Howie said.

"But really because we love the songs, and it's the last night for most of you here, we figured we'd give you a special slowww song," Kevin said, his voice lowering, causing many girls to scream louder.

Then they kicked off into the first song, which led into the second. During "Back To Your Heart", Faith let a few tears fall.

It's not that I can't live without you
It's just that I don't even want to try
Every night I dream about you
Ever since the day we said goodbye
If I wasn't such a fool
Right now I'd be holding you
There's nothin' that I wouldn't do
Baby if I only knew

The words to say
The road to take
To find a way back to your heart
What can I do
To get to you
And find a way back to your heart
I don't know how it got so crazy
But I'll do anything to set things right
'Cause your love is so amazing
Baby you're the best thing in my life
Let me prove my love is real
And made you feel the way I feel
I promise I would give the world
If only you would tell me girl
Give me one more chance, to give my love to you
'Cause no one on this earth loves you like I do,
Tell me...

I turn back time
To make you mine
And find a way back to your heart
I beg and plead
Fall to my knees
To find a way back to your heart

"Oh, my gosh, Grace, I can't wait to talk to him," Faith said to her twin.

Grace just nodded and put her arm around her shoulder. "Hey, y'all," Brian said. "This is the last song. And I want to dedicate it to a special someone in the audience-you know who you are." He looked straight at Faith as he said those words, and her heart pounded.

I never thought that I would lose my mind
That I could control this
Never thought that I'd be left behind
That I was stronger than you, baby
Girl if only I knew what I've done
You know, so why don't you tell me
And I, I would bring down the moon and the sun
To show how much I care

Brian kept his gaze on Faith, even as the chorus began and he started to sing.

Don't wanna lose you now
Baby I know we can win this
Don't wanna lose you now
No no, or never again

"Faith, he's singing to you!" Destiny yelled from her other side. Faith didn't take her eyes off of Brian. And he never broke eye contact. He walked nearer to the spot where they were and hopped down. The crowd parted uncharacteristically as he made his way to Faith. He took her hand gently and led her to the stage steps, where he kept her hand in his and climbed the stairs. Faith shook with emotion as Brian looked into her eyes and sang his part to her.

I've got this feeling you're not gonna stay
It's burning within me
The fear of losing
Of slipping away
It keeps getting closer, baby
Whatever reason to live that I've had
My place was always beside you
And I wish that I didn't need you so bad
Your face just won't go away

As the rest of the guys sang the chorus, Brian stared at her, not moving, his hand clutching hers tightly.

Don't wanna lose you now
Baby I know we can win this
Don't wanna lose you now
No no, or never again

Just as he leaned in, he stopped, suddenly realizing where he was.

Flustered, he winked at her, then continued to sing.

I never thought that I would lose my mind
That I could control this
Never thought that I'd be left behind
That I was stronger than you
Don't wanna lose to loneliness
Girl I know we can win
Don't wanna lose to emptiness, oh no
Never again

Brian let go of her hand and motioned to her to wait for him backstage. She nodded slightly and climbed down, making her way to the back of the stage carefully.

Don't wanna lose you now
Baby I know we can win this
Don't wanna lose you now
No no, or never again

She heard them telling the audience that they were great, and thanking them. She heard them say goodbye and come backstage. But there was no way she understood any of it. Kevin reached her first. He hugged her tightly, whispering, "Let him explain," in her ear. She nodded and felt him move.

And there was Brian, behind Kevin, hesitantly watching her. She lowered her eyes and clasped her hands behind her back.

"What are you waiting for?" she whispered. She peeked a glance at him.

He took a step forward and opened his arms. She jumped in them, and then he was holding her like she had wanted him to hold her for the past six days, only tighter. "Oh, I love you, Faith," he murmured brokenly.

"Brian," she cried. "I missed you so much."

"I'm so sorry, Faithie," he said. "I was just pushing her away, you know? She latched onto me, and I was holding her back. It broke my heart when you ran away."

"It doesn't matter," she said. "It doesn't matter. I love you."

Brian kissed her passionately, and she kissed him back. Fireworks of passion erupted and the two stayed entangled in each other's arms as time stopped. Brian couldn't pull himself away. The love he felt kept pouring out and he was unable to stop it, even if he wanted to. The very presence of Faith made him weak.

Brian buried his face in her hair and breathed in. Tears stung his eyes as he realized how close he had come to losing the best thing that had ever happened in his life and what hell it would have been if things hadn't looked up.
