Chapter 33

“Hope, popcorn, please.”

Hope passed the popcorn silently to Promise and listened intently to Grace as she told everything about AJ.

“They don’t even know that we talk about them like this,” Grace finished. “I find that funny.”

“Oh, they’ve got to know. We’re girls, and we talk about our guys. It’s natural.”

“True. But if Howie knew we talked like this, he’d, like, want to join it or something…Jeez, I miss him.” Pause. “Would you STOP with the pillows?!?”

“Pillow fight!” Faith yelled, leaping upwards from her stretched position, taking her flannel covered pillow with her. Grace promptly jumped up and whacked her twin over the head with her goose-feather pillow. Soon, Promise, Destiny and Hope joined them, the mantra, “if you can’t beat ‘em, join ‘em,” repeating over and over in their heads.

Lots of laughter later, they all calmed down and laid there, sighing and catching their breath. Then Faith broke the silence.

“I can’t WAIT to do that with the guys.”

“Oh, yeah,” the rest quickly agreed.

Brian punched the on button with his finger, relaxing on his water bed. He quickly dialed Faith’s number and waited.

“Hello?” someone finally said after four or five rings. They sounded breathless.

“Can I please talk to Faith?” he asked.

“Oh, hi, Brian,” the person said. He then recognized it as Destiny. “Is Howie around?”

Brian was confused. “I called you,” he said.

“I know, I was just wondering if he was with you.”

“Would you shut up about Howie already?” someone in the background shouted.

“Faith wants to talk to her man, and I’m sure he doesn’t want to hear how much you miss Howie.”

Brian suppressed a laugh as the phone line was muffled and Destiny said, “I know he doesn’t want to hear how much I miss Howie – which, is a lot – you don’t have to yell.” She came back on the line. “Hang on, Brian.”

“Sure,” he said, and waited.

Then Faith was on the line. “Hello?”

“Hey, gorgeous,” he said. He could just see her smile.

“Hey, you,” she replied. “What’s up? How was your flight?”

“Couldn’t tell you anything – except, wait. You were there, and I was there, and we were all alone on an empty island with roses and candles on the beach…”

She was laughing. “Hey! That’s how my flight went, too!”

He grinned and settled back, getting ready for a good hour or two of chatting.

“I’m so sick of hearing about Howie…”

“Oh, trust me, Destiny and Grace are all I hear about now…”

“We talked to Hope about Kevin,” she said.

“Really?”

“She’s going to be fine, I know it,” she added.

“That’s good. Kevin’ll be okay, too. And I know just the person to help him.”

“Who might that be?”

“Mallory.”

“Hmmm, let me know what comes up with that.”

“I will,” he promised. “But, Faith?”

“Hmmm?”

“I miss you.”

She smiled. “I miss you, too.”

“And – and I wish you were here. Or I was there. Whichever.”

“It wouldn’t matter,” she said quietly.

“No,” he agreed. “It wouldn’t.”

He didn’t tell her he was driving to Tallahassee next Saturday. He figured it would be much more fun if he surprised her. Just the thought of seeing Faith’s eyes light up and feeling her arms around him made him smile. Yep, he had it bad. Funny how everything changed when you were in love…
