Chapter 19

(Days Later)

"Ya know, you didn't have to do this." Sierra laughed for the first time in ages it seemed.

"Nah, don't worry about it," Nick grinned down at her. " I like being the knight in shinning armor."

"Oh...so I'm the damsel in distress and the hospital is the castle, and you're rescuing me from it." She laughed again. "Exactly." He beamed over-exuberantly.

Sierra smiled to herself. The two of them must have been a sight walking down the hall. Nick had been the one to come pick Sierra up from the hospital, and he had insisted on carrying her to the car, even though she could walk just fine.

"Hmm...well, Nick, shouldn't we be riding off into he sunset on a majestic white stallion, instead of you carrying me to your jeep?" She raised an eyebrow, innocently questioning him. He just laughed in return. "Okay, okay, I see your point," Nick sighed, stopping to scoop her up in his arms more comfortably. "You see Sierra," He spoke as he continued down the hall. "My horse, oh, his name is Frack by the way-" "You are so full of shit Mr. Carter." Sierra sent him a sarcastic look to match his evil grin.

Nick grunted impatiently as he carried her down some steps, and out of the hospital's front doors.

"E x c u s e me, Miss Page, but I don't believe that I was finished." He grinned. "Anyway, my horse, Frack, he's sick...yeah...that's it, and he had to go to the doctors, and he has the flu you see, so he can't be here now." Nick stated matter-of-factly.

"Sure, sure, whatever." She laughed again as they reached his jeep. Nick set her down and dug down in his pocket for the keys. "Did you see the look the we got from the nurses at the front station?" He snickered.

"Well, that's probably because they knew that I can walk perfectly fine.... but someone was carrying me." She smiled at him. "But that's okay, it was very nice of you Nick." He helped her into the car. "So..." Sierra tried to make conversation as they drove down the road quietly. "Where's everyone else? I thought they'd be here." She tried not to sigh too loud. Sierra didn't expect everyone to come to take her home from the hospital, but she had hoped that Brian would have come. "Don't you mean, why isn't Brian here?" Nick didn't have to look at her to hear her take a quick breath.

"Brian? No...no, of course not. I just meant I thought that maybe...um..." She sighed again and gave up trying to explain. She missed him so much, and didn't feel like trying to cover up for it.

"You meant that you wanted Brian to come to bring you back. Sierra, you do a really bad job at lying." He laughed. "So, you really like him a lot, right?" This time he turned his head slightly to look in her direction for an answer.

Sierra leaned her forehead against the passenger window. She couldn't believe how desolate this little beach was. How empty the miles that they drove past were. And how quiet everything seemed to be getting. "Well?"

"Oh...yes, I do like him Nick . A lot actually." She sighed again.

"Why the depressed sigh?" He laughed.

"What if he doesn't like me as much as I like him?" She said. "Brian likes you way more than you even know. You are ALL he talks about, and he talks a lot." He raised an eyebrow, making her blush. Nick knew why Brian didn't come. He also knew what he was planning for Sierra when they got back to the house. She had no idea...
