Chapter 13

Maranda

After dealing with the glares from my superiors and some “she should know better” looks from the ‘over eager to please’ rookies I took my seat.

I vaguely listened to the excited ‘spies’ so-to-speak go on about the new and fascinating tales that they had encountered. Each one trying to over power the next.

“Waste of time if you ask me,” I glared at no one and at the same time everyone, “you’ll always be watched like you’re second best.”

I looked at the ring of small school desks that were filled with rookies. Each one scribbling fiercely on their note pads.

“You’ll never know how stupid you all were to take this job.” I smirked to myself. “Well maybe you will.”

“Ms. Hunter!”

I slowly brought my gaze to my boss who was standing, palms spread on the black marble conference table.

“Yes, sir?” I said a little ruder than I wanted.

“Your new information.” He was obviously having a hard time controlling his anger.

Well so was I and now it was about to erupt. I jumped to my feet. “I will not be distributing any more infuriation at this time. If there is any problem with that…fire me.” I smirked as I grabbed my suitcase and walked back to my office.

I stopped at my secretary’s desk. “I will see no one. You understand? Take note to who calls, but I’m not to be disturbed.”

I waited for a response. She nodded quickly. “I understand Ms. Hunter. Would you like some fresh coffee?”

“No thank you. Have you finished tying my notices?”

“Not yet. I was just in the process of doing so.”

“When you have finished I want you to bring them directly to me.”

“Absolutely. I should be done in a matter four minutes.”

“Excellent.”

“OK lets take five.” The fill in dance choreographer was out of breath long before the rest of us, but she kept up.

“You OK?” Howie asked.

She looked hurt, thought it was just in Howie’s nature to be comforting. “I am perfectly all right and you will do well to remember that.” She stalked off.

I came and put an arm around Howie’s shoulder. “I think you made a friend.” I couldn’t help, but laugh at his face.

“I didn’t mean to hurt her feelings, but she looked like she was shoving it!”

I bent down to tie my shoe. “Well we know that, but she doesn’t know that’s you.”

“Yo B!” Aj called from the other side of the arena.

“Yeah?”

“Will you two stop yelling across the arena? You have legs! Use them.”

I stifled a laugh. Howie had evidently hit a sore spot with her.

I walked over to Aj. “Sup?”

“It’s your lover.” Aj laughed dangling the cell phone in his face.

Maranda’s office

Maranda’s office door opened and slammed just as swiftly and just as loud.

“If you ever, ever walk out of a meeting like that again I will personally have you court marshaled.”

She sat there eyes glowering, not speaking. She let her boss get his anger out before she attempted to speak.

“Are you finished?” She spoke with a calm that flared anger up in his eyes.

“How dare you talk down to me!” He slammed his papers down on the desk.

It had startled her, but she did not let it show.

“I did not mean to disrespect you or any other member of the board -“She was cut off by his growl.

“You did just that! You disrespected everything we stand for. First you question our governmental sponsors and now you storm out of a meeting like you own this place.” He cursed under his breath.

“There is no need to use foul language. I get your point. I crossed the line and it will not happen again I assure you.” Not until after I’m sure you’re trapped anyway.

“You better be right, because if you’re wrong you will pay.”

“Is that a threat?” She kept the look of her bewilderment bottled inside and kept her voice firm.

“No, Ms. Hunter. That’s a promise.” He gathered his small stack of papers and left her office slamming the door behind him.

Rage filled her. “I’m going to have to work faster than I anticipated.” She turned in her chair to look out her window. Rocking it back and forth.

She had an excellent view of the White House.

She paused her rocking and thought. A smile curved on her face.

“She’s being a nuisance!” Tom Clancey paced in the office.

“She’s only a woman nothing to fret about Clancey.” The silver hair man rocked back and forth in his large leather chair.

“She is a well trained spy who knows how not only o use a gun, drive a motorcycle, but she is very good at being stealth.” Clancey suppressed a shudder thinking about how he should have the word ‘over’ trained instead that of ‘well’ trained.

“You are her boss. I should hope you have suppress at least a thread of fear into her.”

“Nothing fears her. None that I’ve seen.”

“On the contrary. There is SOMEONE that she fears for very deeply. She loves him.”

“She wouldn’t dare fall for him. She knows the penalty.”

“Yes, but she has grown over eager. She thinks that we are stupid and that since we are heavily watching others who are new at this game that we are not watching even the most experienced.”

“I don’t believe she is that stupid.”

“No, just naive. She believes that we trust her and are not totally concerned with her every detail. She has just recently learned that the hard way. That is why she was so livid at the conference.” He gleamed with satisfaction.

“What has she discovered?”

“That not only are we watching her services to us, but she will soon see how much we know about her.”

Clancey grew pale thinking to himself, “This is getting dirty.”
