Chapter 26

As the camera's red light came on I felt nerves twitch in my spine. I knew the only way I'd get though this is if I pretended it was just Brian and I. If I was just telling Brian about my big secret. I took a small breath and opened my mouth to speak.

"My name is Maranda Hunter. I grew up in a small town in the heart of Mississippi. At present day I live just out side Orlando, Florida and I also have a small apartment in Washington DC. Many people who are tuning in to this may not know me, but then there are many that will. The things that are going to be discussed this evening are going to both shock you and maybe even frighten some of you. Mostly the ones in the entertainment world are going to have the biggest jolt." I paused to take a breath.

"I am a Watcher and I'm a part of a governmental branch that has been disowned so to speak. I started my training at the age of 16 and would be going into my 9th year if I weren't retiring. In my 8 years of service I learned many things about the rich and famous. My subject was pop legend Brian Littrell of the Backstreet boys. For the better part of my 8 years I kept my personal feelings and my business separate. I didn't date; I didn't really even speak to men. Br…Mr. Littrell didn't even know I existed till a few months ago. I left my family, my first boyfriend and the world I knew to become a spy with the Watchers. I thought it was all legal till a few months ago when feelings started to show for people in my life. Guilt was one of them. I decided to do a little searching of my only to find the government doesn't approve of us watching…spying whatever you want to call it…any more that you do."

"I continued digging up information and dodging my superiors as I worked. Many innocent kids are getting sucked into this and it has to stop. I did the crime and I'm not going to push the blame. I'm serve whatever time they give me willingly, but I will defend myself and the innocent people dragged into this. I'm a Senior Watcher in the entire branch. I could have ignored this whole mess entirely. After ten year a spy is free to go as he or she pleases."

"You're still in danger. The man who brought me into this game, as we'll call it died. The man he was sworn to protect and document killed him. It's true, I do risk my life and others to protect a very capable man. He can protect himself, but the Watchers bring on new threats witch means more protection is needed. I've spent many nights in intensive care, but I've also sent many to their graves. No matter what good deed I've done I do bad to cover over it. And after this I'll do time. And that will be it. I'll be the one judged by you. And if I can help it that will be the way it is forever. You don't want someone else judging you." Shook my head. "They pull you under and your stuck. As a word of warning, they'll be looking harder now. Much harder. Guard your headstrong teens. They go for the ones with ambitions larger than the world they life in and pry on that. Until I'm in jail watch your kids and watch them close. I don't want to be responsible for them hurting anyone else."

The cameraman poked his head around the camera, wide eyed and scared. Her motioned his hand in a circle and put up three fingers.

"Lastly, Mom, Dad and Brian I love you all. I know you may not think so, but I'm going to pay my dues and I'm going to make things right. Some how I promise." With that the red light turned off and the cameraman ran out the door to escape certain death.

I scoffed. "Am I really that scary?"

"You will be after a night or two in jail." My boss came in with three policemen.

I leaned against the desk. "Three" I smiled and questioned as I stood up. "Well I must certainly made a name for myself."

"I'm doing to read you your rights. You have the right to remain silent. Any thing you say can and will be used against you in a court of law. You have the right to an attorney. If you cannot afford an attorney one will be appointed to you…."

I smiled grimly at my boss as the clod metal of handcuffs wrapped around my wrist. "It's not over yet."

"You took the words out of my mouth." His smile wasn't grim or mad…it was the devil's smile.

I looked back at him as the police officers dragged me out.

"What did you do?" I stopped and ran back. "What did you do?"

"Just remember…revenge is sweet in it's own way…my way."

I was dragged from my spot and shoved into the back of the police car.


Two hours later

I looked down at my new clothes as the jail cell slammed behind me.

"Bright orange just isn't my color." I sighed and looked around. I decided that sleep would be a good idea. I lay down on the small bed that was bolted to the wall. I put my arms behind my head for a pillow.

"Hey babe." I sighed and shook my head.

"Do you ever go home? I sear you're a lost puppy."

The cell guard opened the door and let Jake get in before he slammed it shut.

"I broke bail. You'll be out within the hour."

"Thanks." I sat up and looked at him. "You know if I wasn't so stubborn I'd like having you at my back."

"Yes, but we both know how stubborn you are."

I nodded. "To tell you the truth. This doesn't bother me."

"You told yourself not to let it."

"Yeah." I looked around. "I'll be here a long time. The President is going to do it."

"I can't say that's good, but it's not bad."

"I know." I looked at him. "Why shouldn't I go to jail too?"

"Because you're putting an end to all this."

"But I was in the start of it. It makes me just as guilty."

"But you didn't know it."

"But after I did I stayed willingly."

Jake laughed. "Willingly? You've been dodging those creeps for weeks now. Threatening your boss, dig up dirt that could get you shot." He stopped smiling. "They got to me Manda."

He only called me that when something was wrong, I know my completion paled. "What happened?" I jumped and put my hands on his shoulders.

"I got out, but they'll be back. You have to stop them. They're going for Brian."

"What?" I wasn't really worried about Jake; he could take care of himself. "Where?"

"Under the bridge. The old where house. After the concert…" He paused to check his watch. And with a deathly sad look shook his head. "They've got to have him my now."

I shook my head and turned when tears threatened. "No." I whispered. Then yelled, "No! They cannot, I won't let them!"

I turned and headed for the cell gate. "Let me out. My bail has been paid."

The grouch cell guard came over and unlocked the door.

Jake took the black backpack that I didn't notice before, off his shoulder and handed it to me. "You're bike and gun are outside."

I took the bag and nodded. "Thanks." I followed the guard to a changing room when I was all in leather again. I tossed the backpack in the trash and grabbed my helmet.

Being lead to a few other places I was let out. I went straight for my bike and lifted up the seat. There were two pistols and silencers. I placed them in the gun straps under my coat. I grabbed the handful of extra bullets and dumped them into my coat pocket. I put on my helmet, slammed the seat down and climbed on the bike. After it was started I slammed the visor down. I took of with a roar of the engine.
