Chapter 24

"God, please let her be okay." Nick prayed, kneeling down in the hospital's chapel. "What's gonna happen next?" He asked, tears spilling over his cheeks. "I can't lose her, please."He begged. "We're just starting our family and I can't do it all myself."

"Nick?" Brian asked putting his hand on his shoulder. Nick looked up.. his eyes puffed and red.

"I don't know what to do." He sniffled, more tears came streaming down. Brian emraced his best friend and let him cry on his shoulder.

"They want you up there..they need to talk to you." He told him. Nick took the back of his wrists and wiped his eyes. Taking a deep breath, and trying not to cry.. he went with Brian up to the floor Jen was on.

Stepping off the elevator Nick and Brian walked down the hallway and towards the lobby. When they entered the room, everyone that was in there was so surprised at how awful he looked.

"Nick?" Kristen asked coming over to him. He looked up to meet her eyes, and tried to give her a slight smile.. but his chin quivered and he broke down into sobs. "Shhhh, it's okay. She's gonna be fine." Kristen rubbed his back as she held him.

"Mr. Carter?" His heart skipped a beat at the sound of his name. Looking up he saw a doctor dressed in scrubs from head to toe. "Sorry to interupt..but I need to speak with you."

Looking around at everyone, he got up..afraid to hear whatever he had to say.

Coming through the intensice care unit, they stopped in front of a glass window where they could see Jen through it. The site of tubes and iv's hooked up to her was very taken back by her husband.

"The bullet was deeply lodged into her stomach and passed through her uterus. The-"

"Is she going to be okay?" He asked putting his hands on the glass.

"As of right now.. Yes. She'll be just fine. But, it may effect your future." Nick closed his eyes and threw his head back, then opened them to turn his head to face the news. "You may not be able to have anymore kids, Nick. To tell you the truth, I will be very surprised if you could. I understand that you just had a baby a few weeks ago. If Jen was still pregnant, she would've lost the baby."

"But she didn't!" Nick said getting angrier by the minute. "Both our kids are home. Beautiful, Safe, and healthy."

"I know that. I'm just telling you what may happen in the future. Now, Jen is still recooperating from surgery. You can go in there and be with her if you'd like. Have you called your in-laws?" He nodded. "Well, go tell your friends that she's alright, then come back in here and spend some time with her."

"Thanks Doc." He shook his hand and walked back out the doors, first stopping at the phone to call Jen's parents to inform them on her condition. Not to worry, that he'd be home in the morning.

Checking his watch that read 2:15am, he walked back into the waiting room.

"She's gonna be okay. You guys can go home and get some rest, thanks for staying with me." Everyone came to hug him before leaving.

"You staying?"

"Yea. I'm gonna stay with her tonite, then go home tomorrow and have her parents come up."

"If you need anything.. Anything, Nick..Give us a call. Even if you need to drop the kids off for a few hours or the night. We're here."

"Thanks Leigh." She embraced him again before letting Brian say goodbye, then left.

"Hey Baby." He said kissing the back on her hand and just hold it while he talked. "I'm so sorry this happened. You know I do everything to try and protect you. I wish I could trade places with you..because if I could I would. I hate seeing you in pain." Nick rubbed her hand back and forth across his cheek. "I love you so much Jen." He sniffled, getting teary eyed again. "If I lost you..I wouldn't know what to do with myself." He looked around. He slightly laughed. "But, you're okay and I didn't. When you get out of here.. we'll go back to our normal lives and everything will be okay, I promise you that." He sat there staring at her lifeless body, wondering if and when she would wake up. Resting his head on his arm as a pillow, still holding her hand, he began to sing himself to sleep.

Jen grabbed on to Nick's hand and she opened her eyes. Tears welled up in her eyes as she saw tubes and iv's hooked up to her.

"Nick?" She suddenly called out, not knowing she was holding onto his hand. Nick stirred in his sleep and open his eyes when he kept hearing someone call for him. Jumping into a sitting position, he looked around the room confused...until he felt a grip on his thumb.

"Hey Baby." He whispered as he noticed that she was awake. "How do you feel?"

"Trapped." She said groggily. Nick sat at the edge of the hospital bed and kissed her hand.

"God, Jen. I was so scared."

"Me too, Nick. I was begging for my life, please believe me." Jen explained emotionally.

"I do believe you...shhhh don't cry. It's gonna be okay. Shhhh." Nick comforted her. Since he couldn't hold her in his arms, he leaned over her and smoothed her hair as she wept.

After Jen calmed down a bit, Nick went to find the doctor so that he could check Jen out.

"Well, Mrs. Carter.. You gave your friends quite a scare. Especially your husband here.. he was in the chapel while you were in surgery." Jen looked over at Nick how had one of his arms across his chest and the other up so that his hand was playing with his lips, and smiled. Pulling up a chair, the doctor took a seat to deliver some news.. that he didn't know how his patient would handle. "Have you told her what I talked to you about earlier?" He asked Nick. He nodded his head 'no' and placed his head in his hands, then sat down next to Jen and held her hands in his. "Mrs. Carter.. Where the bullet was.. you.." He didn't know why it was so hard to say this. She was so young and in love and looked foward to a future full of kids.."You might not be able to have anymore kids. I'm sorry."

"Are you sure?" She asked..seeming to take this quite well. Dr. Winter nodded. He explained everything he explained to Nick earlier then left to leave the two alone.

"You okay?" Jen shook her head and broke down crying.

"Nick.. why did this have to happen to me? It's not fair." Nick held her hands tighter.

"You know what? We're going to prove these doctors wrong. We're going to have another baby. Not right now.. in a few years. We'll prove them so wrong, Jen.. They'll be surprised.. but we can do it. We just had Cayleigh, and you want to have another right now?" Jen smiled and shook her head. "See. Everything'll be fine. Why don't you get some sleep." He suggested. She nodded and Nick leaned in to kiss her on the lips before sitting back down in the chair he started out in.

Watching her fall into a deep sleep was when he let out his emotions. How could he tell his wife that he was hurting deep down inside. For so long they dreamed about having atleast 4 kids... and as of that moment, they were only having two.

"God, please let her be okay." Nick prayed, kneeling down in the hospital's chapel. "What's gonna happen next?" He asked, tears spilling over his cheeks. "I can't lose her, please."He begged. "We're just starting our family and I can't do it all myself."
