Chapter 9
"Where are they?" Brian asked looking around.
"Probably fucking each other somewhere by a bush or something.." AJ said nonchalantly.
"Uh, AJ!" Leighanne said disgusted. "Their probably somewhere holding a normal conversation, like normal people usually do."
"Or maybe their just fucking each other!"
Leighanne rolled her eyes and all the guys laughed.
"Hey you guys!" I exclaimed gleefully.
"Where have you two been? We were starting to get worried about you,"
Leighanne stated. "Well, maybe all of us, other than AJ."
Nick and I looked at AJ with a confused expression written all over our faces, but just shrugged it off, thinking it was no big deal.
"We ready to go?" Kevin asked everyone.
We all nodded, got up, gathered the trash, grabbed the blankets, and pilled into the cars ready for a little relaxation back at the hotel.
After we arrived at the hotel I went straight to my room so I could take a nap. I was so exhausted from driving around the whole city, I needed to catch up on my ZZZZZ's. I had been asleep for about an hour when the phone in my room began to ring.
"Uhhh!!" I said annoyed. I reached over to my nightstand without even opening my eyes and groggily picked up the phone. "Hello?" I said mumbling into the receiver.
"Hey sweetie! What are you doing?" Nick's cheerful voice asked.
Although I was mad about being woken up, I couldn't help but smile at the
sound of his beautiful voice.
"Hey there! Actually, I was sleeping.."
"I'm sorry. Want me to call back later?"
"No, it's cool. Don't worry about it. What are you doing?"
"Thinking about you, and when I'm going to see you again."
"You just saw me, silly!"
"I know, but I already miss you. Can I come over?"
"Now?"
"Yes, now. Is that alright?"
"Yeah, that's fine. Just to let you know, I'm not even bothering to get out
of bed. I'm too comfortable."
"That's alright. I still have the spare key. See ya in a few."
"Later.." I hung up the phone and waited for him to arrive.
Nick arrived a few minutes later, just like he had promised. I didn't even hear him come into the room, because he snuck in very quietly. I just felt his breath as he approached me.
"Hey.." he whispered.
"Hey," I said looking up at him.
He sat down on the floor next to my bed, and just stared at me. I gave him this look and asked "What are you looking at?"
"You."
"And why are you looking at me?"
"Because I want to take in every detail about you before you have to leave."
I smiled. What a sweetheart he was. He complimented me all the time, and all I could ever do was smile, blush, or just say a simple 'thank you.' I was never one to think of romantic things to say on a spur of the moment basis.
"So, are you still going to talk to my mom?"
"First I'm going to talk to your dad. We have a meeting with him on
Monday, right after we drop you of at your house. If I get the OK from him, then yeah, I'll talk to your mom. I just hope she'll say yes."
"Yeah, so do I. But I've told you how hard it's going to be. She's so difficult! I don't know how I've put up with her all these years."
Just then, the phone rang.
"Can you pick it up please?" I asked him.
He nodded his head and reached his hand up on the nightstand, and picked up the phone.
"Hello?" he asked. He paused, said 'sure' and handed me the phone.
"Who is it?" I mouthed.
He shrugged his shoulders.
"Hello?" I asked.
"Who was that?" rang my mothers frantic voice.
I rolled my eyes, and said "My boyfriend, Nick."
Nick opened his eyes wider and mouthed the words "Who's on the phone?"
I put my hand on the mouthpiece and said "My mother!"
"I sympathize with you."
"Hello!?!" my mother yelled.
"Yeah.. Uh, sorry mom. Look, now's not the best time to talk. Can I call
you back later?"
"Why?" she paused. "Oh god! Are you having sex?"
"MOTHER!" I yelled. "NO!"
"Don't yell at me young lady!"
"I'll stop yelling, when you stop making assumptions!"
"Well, what do you expect me to think? You're all by yourself in San Francisco with five guys that probably have only one thing on their mind. You're going out with one of the guys, and he's in your hotel room right now. And you have the nerve to tell me that now is not the best time to talk. Now, do you understand why I'm angry?"
I thought this over for a moment and did the worst thing imaginable. The thing that I hated, NO, dreaded doing. I agreed with her. We didn't talk much longer after that, but at least we ended the conversation without being angry at each other. Now that was definitely a first.
"What did she say?" Nick asked me interested.
"She asked me if we were having sex."
Nick started laughing.
I was kind of hurt by this. Was laughing really necessary? I think he noticed that I was hurt, because he said "I'm not laughing at the thought, I'm laughing at how your mom can just come out and ask you, just like that."
"That's how my mom has always been. When she really wants to know something, she is not afraid to ask it."
"You should probably try to be a little nicer to your mother."
I looked at Nick in disbelief. "Nick, you really shouldn't be telling me what to do. You don't even the know the half of what my mother has put me through throughout the years."
"That's right, I don't. But I'm willing to listen. Do you want to go somewhere to talk?"
"Yeah, let's go."
"What can I get for you?" a lady at the counter of 'Starbucks' asked.
"We'll have two hot cocos," Nick answered.
"That'll be $5.00."
Nick paid and the lady said "I'll bring them to your table when their ready."
We then walked to a nearby table and sat down.
"So..." Nick said looking at me expectantly.
I knew what Nick wanted me to tell him, but this was a very delicate subject matter for me, and I had to figure out exactly what I was going to say to him.
"If you don't want to talk about it.. I will totally understand."
"No, I do want to talk about it."
"Then tell me what kind of hell your mother has put you through. I'm good at giving advice, maybe I can help you with this problem."
"Well, basically the thing is that I never have any privacy when I am in my house back in San Marino. She's always listening into my phone conversations, and always spying on me when I have people over. Its like she doesn't trust me. Why, just a couple of days ago I was talking with Rose, you know the friend that I introduced you to. Well, I was talking to her about me coming on this trip and she mentioned something about what if me and you hooked up like my father wanted us to, and my mom immediately began to ask questions. She asked me stuff like:
'who is this Nick guy? why is your father trying to set you two up? don't make the same mistake as I did.' Now that is a classic."
"And what mistake is that?"
"Having me."
"Your mom didn't chose to have you?"
"Nope," I said shaking my head. "My mother blames the pregnancy on my father. She says that he put a hole in the condom, or something like that. It's all just a made-up fictional story. My mom just doesn't want to admit that she was partly at fault. See, the thing is, my parents always wanted to have a child, or children, but they weren't ready just yet. They wanted to wait a few more years, until they were more financially stable. That's why my mother was angry when she found out she was pregnant. She's always held a grudge on me. My whole life."
"What about your brother?"
"My brother is loved by my mother so much, its sickening! She is always there for him when he needs her, and everything he asks she does for him. But for her to do something for me, I have to beg, and put up with all of her crap. I just want to move out of the house. And actually I was thinking of moving right after high school ends."
"What does your dad think about it? Does he know that you want to move?"
"I have mentioned it to him before, but he's always laughed at the idea and shook it off. He doesn't think that I am really dead serious."
"Would your dad support you if you moved out?"
"Oh yeah! My mother is the problem, though. She'll probably tell him to save his money on a better cause, or something."
"Don't put yourself down, Rebecca. Your a wonderful person, with a big heart. Your mother is just too stubborn to figure it out."
"That she definitely is."
"So don't let her bother you. I'll talk to your father about it, and then I'll talk to your mother. We'll work something out. Something good will happen out of all of this."
"Promise?"
"Yes, I promise. Now, let's forget about this for now, and enjoy our last night together, alright?"
"That sounds nice."
"What would you like to do tonight?"
"Anything. Just being with you is enough."
"Why don't we go back to the hotel, get dressed for the evening, get into my car and just drive around till' we find something that sounds appealing. Sound good?"
"Sounds great!"
We finished up our drinks, and left 'Starbucks.' Again Nick was sounding really sure of himself about him talking with my mother, and it really worried me. I hoped that for once my mother could be understanding and let me go on tour with the guys. But I knew what was going to happen. I was the only person that wanted to admit the truth.
