Chapter Seven

They continued to stare at one another for a couple of minutes with anger emanating off of them in waves until Colleen broke eye contact.

“You know what, I just don’t want to talk to you. I am going to go back outside and have fun with my friends,” Colleen said as she turned and opened the door. “You can do whatever the hell you want.” And with that she stomped outside.

Kevin just stood there watching her walk down the hill to the pool and the rest of the party and then turned and walked into the kitchen. He grabbed a glass off of the wall and took the water out of the fridge.

I can’t believe she just walked away, he thought as he poured the water. Ugh, I can’t believe I got so jealous over her. We’re not even in a relationship.

Kevin finished his drink and set the glass in the sink while looking out the kitchen window. He saw Colleen sitting by herself on of one of the lounge chairs, staring at her nails. He felt a wave of guilt come over himself as he remembered what he had said to her, and was just about to walk out to the party and apologize when he saw Zach come up and sit on the lounge chair next to her. They started talking and Kevin saw Zach give Colleen a hug.

Just forget it, Kevin thought. She doesn’t deserve an apology. He walked to the sliding door and walked out to the party and sat down with Brian and A.J. and tried to lose himself in the party.

The party wound up around eleven since most of the gang had plans early the next morning. Colleen, Ryan and Brian were cleaning up the outside while Nick, Kevin, Howie, and A.J. cleaned up the kitchen and the house. The guys had decided to spend the night at Ryan’s house since they didn’t feel like driving back to the hotel.

Even though Kevin and Colleen were not talking, the rest of the gang were having fun together and didn’t really want to separate. After they finished up cleaning, they stayed up for a couple more hours and around two in the morning, they decided to go to bed. Soon everyone was sleeping peacefully except for Colleen, who was tossing and turning with restless dreams.

She was having the same dream again. She was dancing with the masked man in the ballroom and the clock had struck twelve but as she reached to take off the mask to reveal who she was dancing with, she woke up. Colleen just laid there, staring at the ceiling, cursing herself. She wanted to know who the guy was in her dream, but every time she went to unmask him, she would wake up. She turned over and looked at the clock. Three twenty three. She sighed. Colleen tried to get back to sleep but at four in the morning, she decided to go for a swim. Sometimes doing laps in the pool or in the lake at home would tire her out and let her sleep when she had insomnia. She got up and put on her black racing suit that zipped up in the back and grabbed a towel and then tiptoed down the hall. She passed the living room, stopping to peek in on the guys sprawled all over the room and then continued on. She opened the sliding door leading out to the pool, stopping suddenly when it squeaked, waiting to see if she had woken anyone up and after listening to silence for a couple of minutes, opened the door all the way and walked down to the pool.

Kevin woke up suddenly as he heard a squeak and laid there as he listened to the night. He heard someone open the patio door and then close it. He quietly got up from his bed on the couch and carefully stepping over Nick and A.J. walked over to the patio door.

He looked through the glass door and noticed someone had turned the pool lights on and was doing laps in the pool. He was about to go back to bed when he saw the pool’s lights shine off auburn hair.

Colleen, he thought. We really have to talk.

Kevin opened up the door and walked down to the pool in his T-shirt and shorts. Colleen was on her tenth lap doing butterfly when she sensed someone watching her. She stopped swimming and turned to see Kevin standing on the pool deck.

“Hey,” Kevin said, nervously.

“Hey,” Colleen said, treading water. “What do you want?”

Kevin looked around the yard. “Well, I heard you come out here and woke up, which is really weird because I am a really heavy sleeper. I mean I could sleep through a parade of elephants going through my bedroom,” he said.

Colleen almost smiled but caught herself as she remembered she was mad at him. But why does he have to look so hot? she thought.

Colleen, remember, he’s a jerk, she thought to herself quietly. Yeah, but a cute jerk. “Yeah, well, your little story is interesting but I was swimming and you sort of interrupted me,” Colleen said, sharply.

Kevin frowned at her tone.

“Well, that brings me to why I came outside, we need to talk,” he said.

Colleen just shrugged and started swimming again.

“COLLEEN!” Kevin yelled, trying to get her attention as she started her laps again. God, she’s annoying, he thought.

Colleen stopped swimming. “What?” she said with an annoyed look.

“Get out of the pool and talk to me,” Kevin said forcefully.

Colleen’s eyes narrowed at his command. Who did he think he was? she thought. “No,” she said as she slowly started to swim again.

Kevin had had enough. “Fine, I’ll come in,” and he jumped in the pool with all his clothes on.

Colleen stopped swimming, in shock as she watched him swim into the deep end and grab her arm and lead her to the shallow end.

“Who do you think you are?” she asked grabbing her arm away from him.

Kevin stood there, looking at her in his drenched T-shirt and shorts. Colleen stared back at him, their eyes locked. They stood there looking at each other hotly, when all of a sudden Kevin kissed Colleen. Colleen stood stock still for a moment and then surrendered herself to the kiss. He pulled her closer and she wrapped her arms around his neck as she put all of herself into the kiss. Kevin slowly backed Colleen up to the side of the pool as they continued to kiss, his hands on her waist. He broke the kiss and started to kiss her down her neck, as Colleen leaned her head back to give him better access. His hands were stroking up and down her sides and just as Kevin started to bring his hand up more, Colleen stopped him.

“Wait, Kevin, I think I need to make something clear first,” Colleen said nervously as she broke out of the embrace and walked out of the pool. Kevin looked confused.

“What?” he asked as he tried to get his breath back after the kiss. He pulled himself out of the pool and went over to where Colleen was wrapping the towel around herself. She looked up at him and saw the worried expression on his face.

“What, did you not like the kiss or didn’t you want to kiss me?” he asked seriously.

Colleen started laughing. “Oh god, I have been wanting to kiss you from the first time I saw you Kevin. It’s just that I need to let you know how far I’m willing to go.”

Kevin didn’t understand. “How far?”

Colleen nodded. “Kevin, if we are going to be interested in one another, you need to know that I don’t believe in sex before marriage. I want to make that clear from the beginning. If you can’t respect that, then our interest in each other isn’t going any further than friendship.”

Kevin smiled. “Colleen, I can respect that.” He took her hand and brought it up to his lips and kissed it. “I think it is very cool that you have such high morals. You’re pretty rare in this world,” he said.

Colleen smiled and sighed with relief. “Oh, not so rare. Not in majority definitely but Ryan, Kendall, my sister Shannon, and my friend Morgan all have the same standard. We just believe that making love for the first time is something special that we want to keep for the guy that we pledge our hearts and the rest of our lives too,” she explained. She stopped talking as she felt the chilly early morning air and shivered.

“You cold?” Kevin asked. Colleen nodded. “Let’s go inside,” Kevin suggested. Colleen nodded again and they started to walk up to the patio. Colleen stopped suddenly and turned around to face Kevin.

“Kevin, I want to say I’m sorry for yelling at you at the party. It’s just that I really dislike Lynn and her slutty ways, and I was jea. . . “ Colleen stopped talking. Kevin smiled.

“Jealous?” he said, finishing her sentence. Colleen nodded, not looking at him. He took her chin and turned her face towards him.

“Well, join the club,” he said looking into her eyes.

Colleen smirked. “Good.” She turned to walk away but Kevin grabbed her arm.

“Good?” he asked, incredulously.

Colleen nodded. “Yeah, good. That means I succeeded. I wanted to make you jealous because I was mad that I was jealous over Lynn.”

Kevin stared at her and then started laughing. “You’re the devil, Colleen.” he said as he pushed her up the stairs.

“Just call me Lucifer,” she said cheekily and they walked into the house, both looking forward to a new relationship.
