Chapter 19

"Happy Birthday, Linds." Nick (my brother) said as he woke me up. He shook me until, my eyes opened. I looked at him and threw the covers over my head. I did not want to wake up.

After I got my brother out of my room and dressed in kakhis and a new green boatneck top, I slowly walked down the stairs. I ate a piece of toast and went back upstairs to brush my teeth, and do my hair. I decided to curl my hair into tendrils. After I was finished, I applied powder and my lip gloss. I opened up the door to my car, when I heard someone honking the horn. It was Nick. I forgot he was taking me to school today. I grabbed my bag and ran to his car. "Hey Nickers." I said as I buckled the seatbelt.

"Hey Linds." He replied. We talked about my new deal with Jive and about how Nick will be trying out for basketball.

School was a normal day. Derrick glanced at me a few times and tried to talk, but Nick had perfect timing and was always there to cut him off. We ate lunch, and choir went uneventfully. The day was pretty much a normal day except I was nineteen. I guess it hurt me a little, but these people haven't known me for a while, so I don't really expect anything from them.

"Thanks Nick, talk to ya later." I hopped out of the car and closed the door when Nick rolled down his window and yelled to me.

"Linds, stop by my house around 7:00." Nick said.

"Yeah, no prob." I walked into my empty house. The only things there were my dogs. They ran towards me and knocked me over. After I got up, I let them out. They ran around for a little while. I looked over into Nick's backyard and saw Brian and Kevin there. They were carrying big boxes and I saw some green tissue hanging out of the box. I turned to walk away when I saw Aaron dart out of the house with a large plastic bag filled with balloons. I think they were running towards the beach. I shrugged off my thoughts and brought the dogs back into the house. I walked upstairs with my backpack and threw it near my stereo. I saw my answering machine light blinking and slowly walked over to it. I pressed the button and listened intently.

"Hey Linds, it's Steph. Happy Birthday, girlie! Have a great day! Hopefully we'll talk again soon. Love ya!" I smiled thinking of Steph. I was friends with her for about 8 years before I moved. We had a bumpy friendship, but everything smoothed out in the end. Ohh... another message.

"Hey Lindsay? It's Steve. Just wanted to say Happy Birthday. Miss ya. Bye." Wow! Steve? Hadn't heard from him. Ohh... another one.

"Hey Linds. It's Dad. Happy Birthday! Miss ya, sweetie. Have a great day. Love ya!" Good 'ole Dad. I'm glad he called. One year he forgot my brother's birthday and I didn't think my mom will ever let him live it down. I turned my stereo on to hear Brian singing "I Want It That Way".

"You are...my fire...the one...desire...believe when I say...I want it that way." I sang as I walked into the bathroom. I brushed my hair out and jumped into the shower. I was feeling a little down about not seeing my friends. I really miss them. Don't get me wrong, I'm glad I met Nick and the guys, and I've got so much to look forward to, but I just miss my old friends. They understand me and they always made me feel significant. Just then I heard the downstairs phone line ring. I ran downstairs in my robe and picked up the phone. "Hello?" I asked a little out of breath.

"Linds?!" I heard my best friend from Penn. scream.

"Yeah. Oh my god, Lauren. It's do great to hear from you, chica." I said smiling.

"Yeah, it's great to hear your voice. Yo, Happy Birthday!" she said quite loudly. I laughed and we talked for about 10 minutes. I heard the door open and in walked my brother and Aaron.

"Oh crap." I whispered as Nick and Aaron walked into the kitchen where I was. Nick and Aaron both stopped dead in their tracks.

"Hey guys." I said walking past them.

"That's a good look on you, Linds." Aaron said smiling. I walked back to him, picked him up and began to spin him around. When I felt my robe almost fall off, I placed him back on the floor. He stumbled around for a little while. "Wow. That was fun." Aaron said shaking his head around. I ruffled his hair a little more and walked up the stairs while adjusting my robe. I blew-dry my hair, got dressed, and began to write some poetry. After a writing a few stanzas, I decided to play my keyboard. I pulled out the "Millennium" song book and began to play "Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely". I heard a nice tune escape my keyboard. I tried to write my own music using similar notes. I relayed the notes out on the keys and was surprised to hear them actually sound good. I smiled and flipped through my book of poems. I sat and tried to change the poem into lyrics. The poem was about being lonely and about how friendship is extremely important. By the time I had written half of the song, Nick had called and told me to wear something nice, but not too nice. I put away the music I was writing and walked into my closet. I glanced at my black skirt and pulled out a sleeveless black beaded top. It looked like someone sewed stars onto the shirt. It was really pretty. I put on a black cardigan over the sleeveless shirt and slipped on a pair of comfortable dress shoes. I put half of my hair into a clip and applied my powder and lipgloss after brushing my teeth. I walked down the stairs to find a note on the counter. I read it aloud. "Linds. We all had to run out for dinner. We'll be back in an hour. -Me" I placed the note back on the counter and walked out the door. I decided to walk to Nick's house. There was no use in driving a few feet. I approached Nick's house to see no lights on. I rang the doorbell and the door opened about a second later.

"Hey Linds. Come in." Nick said stepping away from the door. I walked in. Nick turned on the lights when he notice me look around the room. "Sorry."

"It's no problem, Nick. Have a seat. I'll be right back." Nick said running up the stairs. I sat and waited for about two minutes. I was sitting there humming the tune to the song I had just written. Nick looked at me with something behind his back. "That was nice. What song is it?" He asked.

"Actually I just wrote it before I left." I said standing up. "Nick, what do you have there?" I asked pointing to his back. He pulled out a black bandana. "Ummm... Ok..." I said raising an eyebrow.

"Turn around." He said playfully. Ok, this is trippy. I did as he said and turned my back towards him. "You look really nice tonight." Nick said softly into my ear. "And I'm happy to see you wearing the necklace I gave to you." Nick said touching the chain of the necklace after placing the bandana over my eyes. His touch sent a chock down my spine.

"What is this all about?" I asked Nick turning around to touch his face. I found his hair and began to tug on it. "Tell me, Nickolas."

"I can't believe you would think I forgot your birthday. Now no taking Miss. Lindsay. Just take my hand and walk with me." Nick said taking my hand. We walked for a few minutes when Nick spoke again. "You may wanna take your shoes off." I just smiled.
