Chapter 18

It was Monday morning. Almost 7:00. I didn't know if Nick was going to pick me up or what. I remembered I had to go to Jive today and decided to take my own car. I dressed sort of nicely in my knee-length black skirt and white button down shirt with a few black stars scattered randomly across the fabric. I jumped into my car, and turned on the radio to hear 'Rage Against The Machine' "Guerilla Radio". I really liked that song. I sang along with it and pulled into the school parking lot. I found Kristin and Carrie talking and decided to go hang out with them. Out of the corner of my eye, I saw Derrick and a familiar redheaded girl talking to eachother. I had a bad feeling in my stomach, but shrugged it off.

I tried to avoid Nick throughout the day. He did show up at my locker a few times, and he sat next to me in a few classes, but I was a little hurt that he didn't understand my position. During choir, Miss Malloy congratulated me on the audition. She wished me luck and with that, there were only a few more periods left of the day.

I was on my way to the audition when I realized I had no idea what to sing. No one told me anything. I was a little worried, but when I walked through the doors to the Jive building, I knew I had to calm down. I walked up to the receptionist and told her who I was. Lou was all ready and she sent me into his office right away. I walked in to see a rather large man sitting comfortably in a swivel chair. He turned to face me.

"Nice to meet you, Lindsay. I'm Lou and this is Angie, a stylist, and Max, one of the many songwriters we use on the Jive label." I shook everyone's hand. They were all really sweet. "I know we didn't tell you what to sing. Since your friends with BSB, we'd like to hear you sing one of their songs, and if you have any of your choice, you could also sing that." I nodded. Lou escorted everyone into a small room filled with buttons, microphones, and headphones. There was a man named Marley, who controlled everything in the room. Lou directed me to a room with a single music stand, microphone, and headset. I saw Lou on the phone with someone. He pressed a button and his voice boomed over me. "What shall you sing first?" I thought for a moment.

"I Need You Tonight." I replied satisfied by my selection. I decided it was like an ode of some sort to Nick. He helped me here, so I'll do something in his honor. I placed the headset on my head and heard the familiar piano notes through my ears. I cleared my throat and began to sing. "Open up your heart to me..." I sang with such feeling. I was really impressed with myself. When the song was over, I held the last note. When I was finished, I removed the headset and looked through the glass. Lou was on the phone again. Real nice! I thought sarcastically. I heard Lou again.

"Would you please come in here now, Lindsay?" I had a bad feeling about this. I walked into the room and shut the door behind me. Lou looked up and smiled at me. "That was great, Lindsay. Maybe you could replace Nick." Lou said laughing.

"I can't be replaced." I heard someone from another room. All of a sudden, all the Backstreet Boys were in the room giving me hugs. I hugged Nick and he said "Sorry." I nodded and hugged him tighter. When we pulled away, everyone was looking at us.

"So, Linds. I'm ready to sign a record deal right now. How about you?" Lou asked. I looked at him in shock. Was he serious? This was my dream. I had been singing since I could cry. I grew up with music, and now I'd be making my own.

"I am, but I'm gonna have to discuss this with my mother and then we'll be able to make a decision." Lou shook his head knowing what I meant. After the guys congratulated me, I drove home in complete silence. I wasn't sure if I was ready. I wanted to finish high school and do normal teenage things. Oh well, I think would be a wonderful opportunity.

It's been about a week since I had my audition. My mom talked with Lou and she wants me to have a music career. He will be sending me on a promotional tour around Christmas. I may have sounded very forward, but I told Lou I did not want to officially tour till after school and that's even if I become popular. I also said that I didn't want to be fake. I was not going to dye my hair, or change my image to become a mold for him. I did not like Britney or Christina because they look so fake. I have no respect for them.

Speaking of the date, my birthday is coming up. October 4th, baby! I didn't really tell anyone about my birthday, so I'm not expecting anything. Oh well.

~At Nick's House~

"C'mon Aaron, that's not fair. You're almost as bad as your brother." Nick (my brother) said to Aaron.

"Hey, man, that wasn't nice." Nick said hearing my brother's comment.

"Sorry. You know Lindsay's birthday is on the 4th, right?" Nick nodded. "Are you doing anything?" Nick asked.

"I don't know if I should tell you. I usually don't trust kids around my brother's age."

"C'mon. Tell me." my brother urged.

"Alright, but no telling!" Nick said sternly.
