Chapter 28

I woke up the next morning to see my mother asleep on a little mini sofa looking thing in my room. I looked around the room. It was so cold and so plain except for the few balloons I had. I looked to see a bouquet of roses sent from my grandparents in Pennsylvania. My mom must have called them. I decided to go back to sleep considering there was nothing for me to do.

I felt someone squeeze my hand. I instantly woke up and saw my step-dad, Sammy. I smiled at him and looked at the clock. It was 2:25 pm. School would be letting out soon...and then I'd get to see Nick! "How're you feeling Linds?" Sammy asked me.

"Not too good. My back is killing me and my right leg is itchy." I said looking at the cast on my leg. Sammy looked at the cast.

"Your mom had to go to work. She should be calling here in about an hour and she told me Nick will be stopping by later so I can go check on your brother at home." Sammy said. "I'm getting a little hungry so I'm gonna go to the snack machine and get some goodies. Want anything?" He asked letting go of my hand.

"No, thanks." I saw Sammy turn the corner. Damn, this bed was uncomfortable. I tried to move around, but the stinging pain in my back didn't want me to move. It felt like someone was stabbing me. Instead, I laid back, closed my eyes and began to sing 'Show Me The Meaning Of Being Lonely'. "Guilty roads to an endless love. There's no control, are you with me now? Your every wish will be done, they tell me!" I sang quite loudly.

"Surprise!" I heard a group of people yell. I opened my eyes and looked around my room. There was Nick, Brian, AJ, Kevin, Howie, Kristin, Tony, and Carrie. All of a sudden it looked like I was having a party in my room. Before I knew it, Tony whipped out a black magic marker and had everyone sign my leg. Sammy came back into the room with sodas for everyone. Each person greeted me along with saying their little comments about my physical state. A few minutes later, everyone had cleared out of the room except for Nick. He would be staying with me for a while. I was happy everyone came to visit me. My room was looking much livelier considering I was engulfed in balloons, flowers, cards, and aluminum cans.

"Thanks Nick." I said after watching him writing in his notebook for a few minutes.

"For what?" He asked looking up at me.

"Everything. You don't have to be here, but you are. You could be at home playing video games or cruising for chicks with AJ, but instead you're sitting here doing your homework taking care of me." I said happily and seriously.

"That's what friends are for." Nick said. We smiled. I turned to my right to see the picture frame of Nick and I that I had in my room. Nick saw me look at it. "Oh yeah, I stopped by your house real quickly last night when your brother was home and got some of your stuff. I thought you may want to have the picture here." Nick said. I laughed.

"Thanks a lot, Nick." Just then, the doctor walked in. We both looked at him.

"How are you doing today, Lindsay?" Dr. Erikson asked.

"A little better, but my leg is really itchy and my back still hurts." I said touching the cast.

"Well, it is going to bother you for a while. On the bright side, we can let you out Thursday night, but you're going to need to stay in bed for a while. We are going to send you home with some pain killers and crutches. I recommend you don't move, but if you must, you have to use the crutches. I also recommend you stay at home form school on Friday. " The doctor began.

"But-" I started.

"I know about the concert. If you insist on singing, you must be very careful when moving around. When you are singing, you have to rest most of your weight on your left leg to ensure your right leg won't buckle underneath you." The doctor finished.

"All right. I think that's all I wanted to know. Thanks a lot." I said as the doctor checking on my leg and felt my back. I cringed as he touched some of the sore spots. When the doctor left, I turned to Nick and smiled widely. Nick stood up and hugged me lightly knowing my back was a tender area.

~Thursday 5:35~

"Lindsay, it was a pleasure having you as my patient. When you get the cast off in a few weeks, you'll be back here for physical therapy. Remember everything I told you about the pain killers and try not to bump into things." Dr. Erikson said my accident as soon as I stepped out of bed. I tried to swing my leg out of the bed and wound up knocking over everything on the table that was next to me. I was just happy Nick had already packed up all my stuff, so my picture frame was all right. I smiled recalling the incident in the hospital room.

"Thanks for everything Dr. Erikson. I'll see ya later." I said closing the door of Nick's truck.

"No problem. Feel better. Take care of her Nick." The doctor said peering through the window of the truck.

"You know I will." Nick said before we drove off. Nick told me about some of the things going on in school that I had missed. Nothing too crazy going on. When we pulled up to the gate, the guard, John, was happy to see me back home. He buzzed us in. I smiled knowing in a few minutes I'd be at home with my family and my dogs. I really missed everyone. Nick pulled into my driveway and hopped out of the car. He jogged over to the passenger side and helped me get out of the car. He pulled my crutches out of the back seat and helped me to the front door. My mom opened the door quickly and embraced me. I almost fell over. I think she was happy I was back home. Nick ran back to his car and retrieved all the balloons, flowers, cards, and bags of stuff he brought to keep me company when no one was there. I walked into the house and my mom forced me to sit down on the couch. She began talking to me as I noticed Nick entering the house with the last of my stuff.

"Linds, there was this guy named Will who kept calling on your line. Who is he?" My mom asked as Nick sat beside me. I got an uneasy feeling in my stomach. I didn't want to talk about Will with Nick sitting next to me. I began to fiddle with my hands and noticed something missing.

"Oh my god!" I yelled looking at my middle finger. "My ring, where is it?!" I yelled almost bringing myself to tears.
