Chapter 4
Nina pressed for all the details when I got home, showing no mercy until I told all. We were complete opposites and how we get along never fails to amaze me. I'm very messy, into sports like soccer and basketball, can be crazy or totally sane, and pretty smart. Na is about 5', with short, spiky blond hair, dark eyes, pale skinned, a clean freak, into arts like painting and a total party animal and 100% insane, but also very smart. She's my best friend and she could tell if I was lying to her even if she was blindfolded, gagged and had ear plugs in.
"And guess what the best part is, Na?" I teased, grabbing an apple to munch on.
"Ooh, what, what?" Na cried, her lithe body practically jumping with excitement.
"They invited us to go to the beach with them and some friends tomorrow. You game?"
"Of course I'm game! I wanna meet this angel with ungodly blue eyes! Whatever made you think I wouldn't be?" Nina cried, smacking me with a pillow. Grinning, Nina teased me about Brian until I bombarded her with one well aimed, hard thrown pillow.
"Gotcha!" I laughed as she came back with reinforcements. Thankfully, the phone rang just then, and laughing hard, I cried, "Stop, that might be Brian!" She smacked me with two more pillows as I picked up the phone.
"Hello...Nina Marie Hauskom, quit it!!!" I laughed in my vain attempt to sound stern. "Hello?" I said again and was greeted by soft laughter.
"Hey Kris, it's Brian.." I shot Nina a look. She started making funny faces at me and I turned my back on her so I wouldn't burst out laughing.
"Hey Brian, wassup? When do you want us to come over tomorrow?"
"Oh, we'll come get you around three or so. We're gonna be there past sundown," Brian hinted.
"By the way-" he started, but was interrupted from my end. Nina had turned up the stereo full blast, and a song called, "That's the Way I Like It!"
"Na, turn that down!" I yelled, putting the phone away from my mouth. "Sorry Brian, she's being very immature tonight," I apologized. There was silence and I thought he'd hung up.
"Brian, you there?" I asked, because Na had turned down the stereo.
"Yeah, I'm here. Who was that singing?" His voice sounded almost cold, and I wondered what was wrong with him. I mean, it's just a song.
"Ya know, I'm not sure. Some guy band, I guess. Their music is cool, but I don't remember the name. Why?"
"Oh, just curious. Anyway, we'll pick ya up at three. See ya tomorrow!" Brian hung up, and I was a little confused. He just got so..cold all of a sudden. All well, I guess I would find out tomorrow. *
I woke up late the next morning, and I stared at the ceiling for a moment before I remembered why I was so excited. All I had to do was see Brian's bright blue eyes in my mind and I started to smile. He was so nice, funny and caring. I mean, he picked me up in the middle of the night, listened to me whine about my awful day and comforted me while I cried. On top of that, he made me laugh and made sure I was okay. I realized I was starting to like this guy, but I knew absolutely zip about him. I thought about him asking me to go to the beach and my smile grew.
"Whatever you're thinking about, it must be good 'cause you have the biggest grin on your face, Kris," Na said, checking in to make sure I was up.
"Pretty good," I agreed, finally opening my eyes. The clock read 12:00 by the time I woke up enough to get up and take a shower.
*Brian's POV*
I followed Kris' directions to her apartment and mentally berated myself, then verbally to Kevin, for being so rude the night before.
"When I heard us in the background, I just kind of froze up on her. Kris is so cool, but the fact that she doesn't know who we are drives me crazy, 'cause I'm afraid of what will happen when she does find out. What if..." Kevin started chuckling, then cut my worries short.
"Man, you are crazy about her, forget about if she knows or not! Seeing you this messed up is unusual and quite amusing....oh, this is it." Kevin pointed to a huge building. The girls were at the door before I knocked.
"Hey, Kris," I said, grinning like an idiot. Her shiny black hair was pulled back in a French braid, and she was wearing khaki shorts and a black tank top, with her suit on underneath. Her blue eyes warmed when she smiled at us.
"Hey Brian, Kevin! This freak next to me is my room mate and the resident nut case. But you can call her Nina." I shook hands with the short, spiky haired blond.
"Hey guys! Sorry about last night, Brian. I didn't mean to be that annoying," Nina said, 100%, charmingly lying.
"Yes, I'm sure Na! Anyway, it wasn't a problem."
"You girls ready? We're meeting the others at the beach," Kevin said, leading the way back towards his car. *
*Kris' POV*
"Hey this place is awesome!" I cried.
The beach was at the base of a rocky cliff, and the water glowed a crystal green-blue color you only see in brochures. The glistening white sand stretched at the base of the cliff for at least a mile, and was a good 600 yards from the cliff to the water's edge. Brian joined me at the cliff's edge, taking a deep breath of the warm sea breeze.
"Yeah, it is! AJ owns all this, and a house farther up the road. We're allowed to come here whenever, he doesn't care. The only bad part is we don't have time to enjoy it as much as it should be," Brian glanced at me and made a funny face meant to make me laugh, then grabbed my hand.
"C'mon, lets go swim!" he urged, pulling me towards the others as they headed down to the beach. *
