Chapter 6

*Kevin's POV*

We were all around the fire, getting ready to toast marshmallows, when I saw Kris and AJ coming out of the darkness. AJ winked and held up this huge bucket of water, which I'm sure was very cold.

"Hey, Howie, c'mere for a second," I motioned for him to join me, since he was sitting right next to Brian.

"What's up, Train? Oh, could you get me a marshmallow?" Howie saw the two and was glad Kevin had called him over. I glanced at Brian, who looked lost in thought as he stared at the fire. *

*Kris' POV*

"Be ready to bolt," AJ whispered as we held up the giant bucket over Brian's head, so heavy that it took the two of us to hold it up. I saw Nina inch into Nick's arms and further away from Brian, who must've been oblivious to the world 'cause everyone was watching him.

"3...2...1," we counted, followed by a huge splash and Brian's yelling. AJ tossed the bucket aside, and we were all laughing as Brian jumped up and turned around, his blue eyes blazing.

"Gotcha, Brian!" I laughed, backing away as he looked at me. "I told you I'd get you!" Brian smiled an evil smile, then said, "How would you like a nice, big hug, Kris?"

"Um, that's okay, really! Why don't you go hug AJ?" I screamed and ran the other way, tearing off my shirt so that I'd have something dry for later. The others were doubled up with laughter, and Kevin yelled, "Take it all off, Kris!" making them laugh even harder. I sprinted like I'd never done before as a soaking wet Brian chased me. Quickly, we sprinted into the shadows and I would've gone up the cliff, but Brian caught me and hugged me close, all slippery and wet.

"Ewww, Brian!" I yelled, my bathing suit top and shorts soaking wet in seconds. We collapsed to the sand, laughing and trying to catch our breath.

"Have you ever considered track?" Brian gasped, sitting up. I was laying with my back on his chest, and was gonna move, but Brian wrapped his arms around my waist.

"Wait, don't go," he whispered, and I was obliged to agree. We just sat there for a few minutes, not really saying anything, yet saying so much more than words ever could.

"Let's head back," Brian suggested, pulling me to my feet. He stripped off his shirt and I could tell he was in good shape, even without much light. I giggled, remembering what Kevin had said.

"Take it all off, babe!" I said. Brian made a funny face.

"Maybe some other time, when the others aren't around." I winked at him, still laughing.

"Is that an offer?" Brian started laughing, unable to contain himself. I chose to ignore his last comment.

"Hey, what happened, did you have heart surgery?" I asked when I caught sight of the scar on the left side of his chest. I ran my fingers along it, completely forgetting my resolve as to being just friends as Brian replied, "Yeah, I had a heart valve problem, and had surgery two years ago." He smiled, then said in a deep voice, "Now I have a manly scar."

"Oh man," I groaned, but laughing my head off. I stopped him as we drew closer to the fire. "Brian, I don't know how to say this, but, well..I really like you." I figured now was as good of a time as any to say it straight out.

"I like you too, a lot." The meaning and truth in his voice when he said that surprised me, because I knew he wasn't lying. I took a deep breath, unsure of how to handle my many emotions at the moment.

"You don't know how happy that makes me Brian, but I have a favor to ask. Can we... work on getting to know each other before anything else happens? I'm not ready for commitment right now, for obvious reasons, I guess."

Brian's oh-so-blue eyes were looking deep into mine, and whatever he was looking for, I think he found it because he squeezed my hand and said, "I understand completely and I'm willing to do that for you, babe. You just say the word, though, and I'll be there for ya. I can't wait, I have a feeling we'll have a lot of fun together, Kris."

"Thank you, Brian," I whispered, giving him a big hug. He kissed me on the forehead and we slowly walked together back to the group sitting around the blazing fire, which was dying down a little.

"Hey you two, what happened? You were gone for a while," Bone teased, amongst whistles and knowing smiles sent our way from the others. I winked at B-Rok, saying, "Wouldn't you just love to know, Bone!" We were all laughing by then and AJ picked up a stick and marshmallow, tossing them our way as Brian and I settled for a long night on the beach *
