Chapter 70
A Couple of Hours Later
Brian's View
"Brian," I heard someone whisper from in front of me.
I just groaned and turned in my seat. I was curled up into a hospital chair
trying to get some sleep before Tiffany had the babies.
"Brian! Wake up!" I heard the same voice yell. My
eyes snapped open and I looked at Tiffany's bed in alarm.
"What? What's wrong?" I asked sitting straight up.
Tiffany was sitting up right in her bed holding her stomach and breathing
a little heavily.
"Baby, are you alright?" I asked worried. She looked
at me while she held her stomach and said, "They're coming!"
"They are!?" I asked jumping to her side and grabbing
her hand.
"Yes! I think I would know Brian!" she said
frustrated.
"Hang on Sweetie, I'm gonna get a doctor in here right
away," I said kissing her forehead and running into the hall. I walked down
the hall looking in each of the hospital rooms to see if her doctor was anywhere.
Finally I saw him by a corner talking with a nurse quietly. I jogged up to
him and took his arm. He looked at me questionably.
"Can I help you Mr. Littrell?" he asked taking off
his glasses.
"Yes, my wife is having the babies. Can you please
go in there and deliver them?" I asked. He nodded and followed me down the
hall. The nurse, I'm guessing, went to get some other nurses to help out.
I passed the waiting room and saw everyone sitting
in chairs chatting quietly or sleeping. Some looked up at me curious and
others didn't even see me. I stopped and said, "The babies are coming."
Everyone's heads jerked toward me with huge smiles
on their faces.
"Finally!" Nick said sitting down in one of the chairs.
I'm guessing he's been standing for quite awhile.
"I'll be back soon to tell you how things went," I
said happily and then ran down the hall to Tiffany's hospital room. I walked
in and saw the nurses patting Tiffany's forehead with a wet napkin. She was
breathing heavily and her face was already beginning to get sweaty. I walked
to her side and grabbed one of her hands off her stomach and gently squeezed
it. The doctor then walked in putting some gloves on.
"It looks like we're going to be having twins today
Mrs. Littrell," he smiled at her. She looked up at him and said, "No duh!
I can feel them in there! Now will you please get them out of me?"
"Of course, just keep calm," he smiled. I don't see
how he can be smiling. I'm a nervous wreck and I'm not the one delivering
the babies!
"OW! OW! OW!" Tiffany moaned through clenched teeth.
I kissed her cheek and squeezed her hand affectionately.
"Ready?"
"I have been!"
"OK push," the doctor said. Tiffany held her stomach
with one hand and squeezed my hand as she pushed. Her hair was matted down
to her face from sweat and I could tell that she was tired.
"C'mon baby...keep pushing," I said pushing some hair
behind her ear. I was beginning to be an expert at this thing. I have been
through this many times.
"I am! Brian I swear this is the last time I'm doing
this! I'm through! From now on you're sleeping in another bed! No wait! A
whole different room! This isn't happening again!" she yelled. The doctor
and the nurses all snickered and I just looked at her with wide eyes.
"I would think you would be used to this by now Mr.
Littrell," the doctor chuckled.
"I thought I was too," I slightly smiled.
"Stop the chitchat!" Tiffany said.
"OK lets try another push," the doctor said going
back to work. Tiffany leaned forward and I swear, I thought her head was
going to explode she was pushing so hard and we haven't even gotten one of
the babies out yet!
"The head is out," the doctor said smiling up at us.
Tiffany sighed and leaned back a little bit. I looked and smiled widely.
Here comes baby number 1.
"Just one more big push," the doctor said looking
up at Tiffany. Tiffany squeezed my hand tighter and pushed. Finally I heard
the most familiar sound of a baby crying. The doctor handed the baby to one
of the nurses and smiled at me, "It's a boy."
Tears started to come to my eyes as I looked at the
little miracle in the nurses arms. She handed him to me as Tiffany fell back
against the bed breathing heavily. Tiffany smiled when I showed her our new
baby boy and was going to begin to cry but she sat straight up again. I looked
at my little angel one more time and then handed him back to the nurse. Once
I did that I grabbed Tiffany's hand once more.
"Just a few more pushes Mrs. Littrell."
Tiffany then began to cry softly. I knew this was
hurting her and she was exhausted. I wouldn't really blame her. I put her
hand in both of my hands and looked into her eyes, "I know you can do this
honey. I promise that this will be the last time you'll be in labor. I'll
even move in a different room to prevent it."
She smiled at my last comment, "I think you're going
to have to move to a different house."
I grinned and said, "Whatever it takes to prevent
you from being in this situation. This is your 5th time in labor and baby
I'm surprised you lasted this long."
"I am too," she laughed and then she turned serious.
"But I don't regret ever having any of our children and I don't regret having
these little bundles of joy either. When I say all those things about I'll
never let you do this to me again and stuff like that...well that's just
the pain talking, not me."
"I know that honey, I know."
"And I don't want you to go into a different room
at home," she said.
I smiled and said, "I know that too."
"OK, just checking," she smiled. I kissed her forehead
and pushed some hair out of her face. She then sat up and started to breath
heavily again. Here comes baby number 2.
"Push, breath, push, breath, push, breath," I said
over and over. A minute later Tiffany looked at me annoyed and said, "That
isn't helping any!"
Everyone chuckled in the room and Tiffany went back
to pushing. I could tell the pain was less now because she wasn't squeezing
the life out of my hand and she really wasn't yelling at anyone anymore which
was good.
"OK the head's out, just one more push."
Tiffany leaned forward and pushed. I held her hand
and kissed her cheek showing that I was right by her side. Finally she fell
back exhausted and the sound of a baby crying filled the room.
"It's a girl," the doctor smiled getting up. He gave
the baby to a nurse and she wrapped a blanket around her. Two nurses then
walked up to us and gave the baby boy to me and the baby girl to Tiffany.
Tiffany held her daughter so gently and caring that I just couldn't help
but smile at how motherly she looked. I looked down and found one of my little
miracles fast asleep, his chest rising and falling in fast breaths. I then
began to cry. I always do when one of my children are born. All this emotion
hits me everytime. I can never get used to the fact that I made this little
human being. I created this life just by showing an act of love with my beautiful
wife.
I looked at Tiffany with tears streaming down my cheeks.
Tiffany was humming silently and rocking our new baby girl. She looked up
at me and smiled.
"I love you," I said softly.
"I love you too," she said back. I then kissed her
lips softly, loving every single moment in that room.
