Chapter 1
*Two
Years Later*
A short, blond young woman of about 19 glanced around her apartment, which was
filled with her five closest guy friends, fresh from their last tour. Nina Hauskom
glanced out the window, watching the late April sun shine through. The guys
chattered amongst themselves, and Nina's mind drifted back to that day, two
years ago, the day Kris had left them.
*Flashback*
Nina stepped into her apartment late that night, her rebelliously short, spiky
hair flat from the rain pounding outside.
"Curses, curses and double curses for not listening to the weather man
this morning," Na muttered, shaking like a dog as she walked in. Na realized
there were lights on, but Kris was usually out by now.
"Kris?" she called, taking a step towards her room. Flipping on the
light, Nina saw a haggard face, blue eyes sunken deep, looking back at her.
"Brian, what's wrong? Where's Kris?" Brian ran a hand through his
tousled, sandy curls and said hoarsely, "She's gone." Na was about
to ask, "What? Where?" when Brian handed her a note.
"Oh Brian, I'm so sorry! I didn't know," Nina cried, feeling tears
welling up in her eyes as she held him while he sobbed his pain and anger.
***
Nina was jolted back to reality as music blasted from her stereo, and warm arms
wrapped around her waist.
"Hey, what's wrong Na?" a soft voice asked. Na turned and looked deep
into a pair of bright blue eyes. She brushed a blond strand out of Nick's face
and murmured, "Nothing much, just thinking about Kris.."
"Na, phone! I don't live here, and I'm not your maid, so come get it!"
AJ yelled from the kitchen.
"Thanks Bone!" Na yelled back sarcastically, scrambling over Howie's
outstretched legs and running into a tall, handsome man before grabbing the
phone on the fourth ring. She hit the ON button, yelled, "Turn it down,
I'm on the freakin' phone!" then said pleasantly, "Hello?" running
a hand through her now lengthy blond hair.
"Na?"
"Oh my gosh, Kris is that really you? I haven't heard from you in almost
two and a half months, since you refuse to give me your digits," Na scolded,
though delighted to hear from her. Na glanced out in the living room, where
all sound had disappeared and all eyes were on her. Stepping back in the kitchen,
she whispered, "Kris, the guys are here. Do you wanna talk to them?"
"Sure, we should be able to handle this like mature adults."
"Where's Brian?" Na asked quietly, getting ready to put on the speaker
phone.
"Bathroom," Howie replied, his brown eyes nervous.
"Okay Kris, you're on!" Na announced. "Hey guys, wassup?"
Kris greeted, a little nervous. She hadn't talked to them since she'd left.
"Yo babes!"
"Como estas?"
"Wassup Kris?"
"Wait, who's...oh yeah, hey Kris!" said AJ, Howie, Nick and Kevin
respectively.
"Hey guys! Um, where's Brian?" They turned around and saw a pale faced
Brian staring at them.
"Um, he's in the other room," Howie replied, the only one who hadn't
turned around.
"Oh," Kris sighed, disappointed. Someone in the background with a
deep voice mumbled to her, and Kris said, "Well, Christian says hi to everyone.
I gotta go, can I call back later, Na? Na, you there?" Na was staring,
open mouthed, at the phone.
"Kris, why...why is Christian with you?" Na stuttered, glancing at
Brian, who was giving her a strange look.
"Na, well.. Chris is my boyfriend." Everyone jumped and turned as
a door slammed, Brian stalking out in a fury, or incredible pain.
"That was Brian, wasn't it?" Kris asked, her voice incredibly sad.
"Kris, where are you?" Kevin asked, running a hand through his dark,
black hair.
"Um, talk to you later everyone, bye!" Kris said, then with a click
and a dial tone, she was gone. *
