Chapter 2
A Week Later in New York
Danielle's View
"I can't believe my Mom let me come! I was so surprised when she said yes," Colleen smiled from next to me in the Taxi. We were on our way to the MTV Studio for the Contest with the Backstreet Boys and we're all ecstatic.
"I know what you mean Col! I about fell on the ground in shock when my Mom said yes," Darlene laughed from the other side of me. I laughed and looked at all the cars surrounding us.
"Why does traffic have to be so bad here?" I asked annoyed.
"It's New York little lady...get used to it," the cab driver smiled at me with his two front teeth missing. I slightly smiled at him and then turned to Colleen to try to avoid him.
"Do you think we have any chance at winning?" I asked.
"No," Darlene and Colleen said simply. I frowned and slumped back in the seat a little.
"Why? Do you think we have a chance?" Darlene asked me curiously.
"Of course I do or else I wouldn't be here in New York far away from my home and far away from Jason," I said playing with the necklace on my neck. It's a heart that has little red gems surrounding it. Jason gave it to me on our 1 year anniversary. He was saving for months and he spent all the money he had with him to get me this. It was so sweet of him.
"Yo Dani...you still with us?" Colleen asked waving her hand in front of my face.
"Oh...yeah sorry," I smiled at her.
"Good cause we're here," Colleen said pointing out the window. I looked out and saw that we were a block or two away from the studio.
"But aren't we supposed to be dropped off up there?" I asked pointing to the studio.
"Honey...like I said this is New York. I can't drive and let you out there. There is way to many people," The driver said turning to me.
"Oh..."
"Now please cough up the money so I can go," the driver said. Darlene looked at him disgusted and threw the money we owed at him. Colleen swung open the door and hopped out. I scooted across the seat and stood out onto the busy street. I looked around me in awe and excitement. I was actually in New York and going to see the Backstreet Boys. This is so great!
Darlene shut the door and stood next to me looking around at her surroundings just as Colleen and I were. The taxi slowly pulled away and we were left standing there in the street getting honked at. Darlene grabbed my arm and dragged me over to the side walk and started to walk.
"Come on...the sooner we get there the better the chance we get picked," Colleen said motioning for me to hurry up.
"OK OK don't
get pushy on me," I said. She ignored me and kept walking. A few minutes
later we were standing in front of a huge crowd in front of the studio.
We stood there staring at the huge crowd wondering how on earth we were gonna
get close enough to get picked to come inside.
"How the hell are we supposed to get up here if we can't get over there?" Darlene asked pointing up to the studio and then near the entrance.
"It's not that bad," Colleen said. Darlene and I looked at her weirdly.
"What? Why can't we just push through them?" she asked.
"Push through them? PUSH through a bunch or teenyboppers?" I asked.
"Yeah just push through them...I mean we're strong girls," Colleen said.
"Strong? Girl where have you been? I'm so weak! I would get trampled in that!" Darlene exclaimed motioning to the crowd.
"Dar...calm down. Why don't we just flash them upstairs? I mean the boys could be watching," I smiled widely. Colleen and Darlene laughed.
"It's bound to get their attention," I smiled.
"That would probably work but I'm not that desperate!" Colleen giggled.
"OK look, we'll just try to get by them and if we get seen and picked to come inside then we're lucky. Lets just give it a shot. I came here to see the Backstreet Boys and I'm going to see the Backstreet Boys no matter what," I said.
"All right," they agreed nodding their heads. I smiled and slowly advanced toward the crowd. To my surprise the girls actually didn't push at us or yell or anything while we tried to get by them. I thought we would be killed or something but they didn't do anything at all. Maybe the people were already picked and they didn't have anything to fight over. There were screams but nothing too loud that I couldn't handle. We came closer to the entrance and when we reached a spot where we thought was the best place we stood and waited.
"This is taking too long! My legs aren't used to standing outside this long," Colleen whined.
"Be quiet...they'll be out soon," I said. She sighed and went back to picking at her nail polish.
"Dani, do you think we're wasting our time out here?" Darlene asked me. I looked at her and shook my head.
"No, I don't think so. I mean if we get picked it would be so great you know? but if we don't get picked then oh well...At least we tried."
"Yeah I guess you're right," she smiled at me. I smiled back and then noticed that the doors opened and a few people came out. The girls screams became louder with pleas of 'Pick me!' I watched as girls were getting picked out and being led inside. Soon a man came over toward us and smiled at some girls as he passed. He picked the girl in front of me and a girl next to Darlene and then he smiled at the three of us and motioned for us to go ahead. Our mouths dropped open in surprise and shock. We looked at each other and squealed in excitement. We were actually picked! I can't believe it!
We were led into the building and to a system of elevators. We got to the floor we were supposed to be in and signed our names on pieces of paper that were available and then put them in the bucket with all the other names. We were seated somewhere near the front of the stage. We weren't far away from it at all. It was really good seats and I think we would get noticed by any of the boys pretty easily. Now that put a smile on my face.
"I can't believe we're actually up here!" Colleen giggled looking at Darlene and I.
"I know! I was about to faint when that guy motioned for us to go," Darlene said. I just smiled and thought of how in a few minutes, the Backstreet Boys will come out here and sit right in front of us. This is probably the greatest day of my life!
15 minutes has passed and everyone is seated and we're now just awaiting the entrance of the Boys. Carson just got done announcing the show and what would be going on for the next couple of hours and then they went to a break. The guys are supposed to come out right when the show comes back on.
Carson raised his microphone up to his mouth and waited for the camera man to tell him when they were on air. Carson then began to talk about the show and said how the Boys would be out here any second. My heart then began to pound. This is it...I'm finally going to see the Backstreet Boys up close. Not from a TV but in real life. In a couple of seconds the world famous pop group the Backstreet Boys will be walking down the same hall I walked down to get into this room and then sit just a few feet away from me. My wish was about to come true and I couldn't believe it one bit. My thoughts were broken by Carson talking into his microphone.
"Now I would gladly like to present to you...the number one group in America...hell the number one group in the World...the beautiful, the talented Backstreet Boys!" Carson said happily.
The screams became shrill and loud as "Everybody (Backstreet's Back)" came on and all the girls stood up and faced the hall way where they would enter. I took a deep breath and stood up next to Darlene and Colleen and waited as the screams continued and finally seeing 5 bodies walking slowly down the hallway.
"Here they come," I whispered to my self and then put the biggest smile possible on my face
