Chapter 23

Brian's View

It's been a couple of hours and Tiffany, Darlene and Michelle are talking in the living room and Nick and I are in the kitchen. Nick wanted something to eat. What else is new!

"So what do you think of Darlene?" I asked sitting next to him at the kitchen table.

He shrugged and said, "She seems nice."

"That's it?"

"What am I suppose to say?" Nick asked.

"I don't know! I just thought she was pretty," I shrugged.

"Hello! Did you forget about Tiffany!" Nick asked looking at me weirdly.

"No! Nick I was just saying…" I sighed. "Forget it."

Nick rolled his eyes at me.

"So?"

"So what?" he asked eating a chip.

"Do you think she's pretty?"

"Who?"

"God Nick! You have a really short term memory!"

He thought for a minute and then said, "Oh you mean Darlene!"

I rolled my eyes at him.

"Yeah she's pretty," he said eating another chip.

"Do you like her?"

"How should I know! I just met her like 2 hours ago and we've barely even talked!"

"I just asked!"

"Hey people!" Tiffany said coming into the kitchen and walking towards the refrigerator.

"Oh hey!" Nick said smiling at her.

"Hey! Whatcha doin'?"

"Getting some pop," she said taking out two Sprites out.

"So what were you guys talking about?" she asked getting two glasses out and putting ice in them. She came over to the table and sat down.

"Nothing," I said.

"Bri was just bugging me about Darlene," Nick said eating some more chips. Tiffany looked at me with wide eyes. She then kicked me under the table.

"OW! What was that for!" I asked. She just looked at me sternly. She poured one of the sprites into one of the glasses and waited for the fizz to go down.

"So what did he ask you?" she asked looking at Nick.

"Just if I thought she was pretty," Nick shrugged.

"And?" Tiffany urged.

"Yeah she's pretty," Nick nodded.

"Do you like her?" she asked.

"What is up with you people!?" Nick asked looking from Tiffany to me.

"I was just wondering," Tiffany said pouring another sprite into the other glass.

"Well don't wonder!" Nick said angrily getting up and walking out of the kitchen.

"Nicky! C'mon!" Tiffany said getting up and following him.

"Baby? I don't think…" I began but she cut me off.

"I think I should! He's my best friend and I want to know what is wrong with him! You started all this! It's all your fault!" she yelled walking out of the room.

"Tiffany!" I yelled getting up quickly and following her. I walked into the living room to see Darlene looking out the window with Michelle next to her.

"What are you looking at?" I asked walking over to her.

"Oh! Um Nick stomped out of the house and Tiffany ran after him. There now outside talking next to Nick's car," she said pointing out the window towards Tiffany and Nick.

I looked out the window at the two of them and tried to see if I could understand any of it. NOPE! Can't understand them!

Tiffany's View

"Nick? What's wrong?" I asked. Nick was about to open his car door.

He looked at me and said, "Why are you and Brian bugging me?"

"We're not bugging you!" I said.

"Then what were you doing in there!" he said pointing to the house.

"Making conversation," I said.

"Well make it with Darlene!" he said turning to open his door. I stopped him.

"Nick what is bothering you!"

He sighed and looked at me sadly.

"Tell me," I said softly.

"You know what's wrong," he said.

"God Nick! Please, will you just accept…"

"I have Tiffany! I have!"

"Then what is wrong!"

"I can't stop thinking about you! OK!? There I said it!"

"Nick…"

"Tiffany! I love you with all my heart but I know you're with Brian. I accepted that. I just…" he sighed. "You know Darlene?"

"Yeah," I said looking at his sad face.

"Well…I…kind…of…like her," he said quietly. I smiled and asked, "What's so bad about that?"

"I don't want to fall for her!"

"Why?"

"Because I'm afraid that if I fall for her and she doesn't for me that I would never love another person again and when you and Brian we're asking me if I thought she was pretty. Well yeah I do! I think she's beautiful! I'm just afraid Tiffany!"

"Nicky, you don't need to be afraid," I said reaching up to his face and pushing a strand of hair away from his face.

"I know but I can't help it," he softly said.

"It'll be OK," I said wrapping my arms around his neck and hugging him. He hugged back tight. "It'll be OK," I softly said in his ear.
