Chapter 23

We were seated quickly at a table overlooking the ocean. As soon as I sat down, I looked through the window. The sky was nice and clear and the waves were calm outside. I felt someone's eyes on me and looked at Nick to see him looking at me. "Nickolas?" I asked snapping my fingers in front of his face. He shook his head.

"Sorry." I half smiled. "What do you think you want to eat?" Nick asked handing a menu over to me. When the waitress came by to take our orders, she asked Nick for his autograph and gave me a dirty look. I raised an eyebrow. What did I do? I looked at Nick to see him staring at the waitress' short skirt. I waited for him to turn to me. After his eyes followed the girl to the kitchen, he looked at me. I raised my eyebrow again, but he didn't notice. He was dazed. This pissed me off. I was jealous! I couldn't believe it. He was so sweet to me earlier and now he's checking out some little bimbo. I know I don't have a leash on him, but come on. We're on a "date"...

I think.

"I'll be right back." I said standing up. I walked quickly to the restroom and pulled out my cell phone. I called my brother and told him to page me with an excuse saying I needed to be home. He said he'd do it. I looked at myself in the mirror and realized I liked Nick so much. He was a great friend, but I wish I could have a first boyfriend like him. I decided that I'm not gonna try to make Nick like me. I think he has no idea how I feel, so I'm not gonna act too girlie around him. I pulled a hairband from my handbag and pulled my hair into a pony tail. I then washed my face to get the powder and lip gloss off of my face. I looked different. More natural, which was something I liked. I walked out of the restroom and towards the table to see Nick taking a piece of paper from the waitress. I figured it was her phone number. I took a deep breath and proceeded towards the table. As I sat down, the waitress gave me another nasty look and my pager went off. Nick didn't seem to notice. He was still looking at the girl. I had to get his attention. "Nickolas! Stop drooling!" I said making him blush.

"Why'd you say that?" He asked a little angry.

"Better wipe that off with a napkin." I said referring to the "drool" on his mouth.

"Why are you being such a smart ass?" Nick said angrily.

"Sorry, but I gotta go. Nick just paged me. There's an emergency." I said standing up.

"Fine. Go. Have fun." I almost slapped him. I held back and looked at him with hurt in my eyes. I grabbed my handbag and left the restaurant. I got into my car and turned on my radio to hear 'Show Me The Meaning of Being Lonely' playing from my c.d. That's exactly how I felt. Lonely. I hated that feeling. I drove somewhere I knew I would be welcomed. Brian's place. I've been there once with Nick, so I remembered the directions vaguely. I pulled into the driveway to see Brian's jeep there. I turned off the car as a tear ran down my cheek. I got out of my car and jogged to Brian's front door. I rang the doorbell and was quickly greeted by Brian.

"Linds?" I looked at him as another tear slid down my face. "Come in." He said hugging me. After leading me to the couch and getting me a some water, I began to tell him the story. I was just beginning what happened at the restaurant, when I had to ask Brian something.

"Bri, why did you and AJ set Nick and I up?" Brian sighed.

"We thought you guys liked each other and maybe you could actually figure it out if you were on a date. You two should really get together. You're perfect for each other. Everyone else sees it." Brian said. I sat there and thought for a second.

"If we were so perfect for eachother, then why does he treat me the way he does?" I asked becoming confused.

"He's young and he gets side tracked by looking at other chicks. Now answer me something. This wouldn't bother you so much if you just cared for him as a friend, right?" Brian knowing he had figured me out.

"Yeah. I kinda came to that conclusion today, but I don't know what to do. The only way I can get his attention is to throw myself at him. And that is something I would not do." I said bringing my legs up to my chin. I then pulled out my hairband and saw Brian stare at me when I did this. I ran my fingers through my hair and looked into Brian's eyes. They were filled with care. He got up and sat next to me.

"I got an idea. How about you spend less time with Nick and try to make him jealous. Like chill with me or AJ." Hmmm...I don't know about this. It sounded weird. I looked at Brian. "How about I pick you up for school in the morning and then I'll pick you up in the afternoon. We can hang out for a few nights and see what happens." I looked at him again raising my eyebrow. What should I do? I don't want to hurt him, but...
